YMCA of the Inland Northwest Aquatics Coordinator in Spokane, Washington
POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Aquatics Department Coordinator ensures smooth day-to-day operations of the Aquatics Department, maintains a safe and exciting environment for employees and patrons, and handles emergency situations in accordance with YMCA protocol. The Aquatics Department Coordinator provides direction to aquatics staff and contributes to high member retention by providing effective leadership, problem-solving skills, and exemplary service to members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform Lifeguard duties including maintaining active surveillance of the pool area, enforcing Aquatics safety rules and YMCA policies, and responding quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
- Perform Lead Lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring staff behavior, observing lifeguard and swim instructor skills, and coaching good behaviors and applications of skills to motivate staff.
- Lead the response and supervise lifeguard staff during emergency situations, ensuring the proper application of skills and procedures. Debrief with staff after the incident, facilitate documentation of events, and submit incident reports the day of the incident.
- Report sanitation issues, unacceptable water quality, and maintenance and supply needs to supervisors and/or Facilities department when necessary. Evacuate the natatorium for chemical or contamination issues when required, communicating any unscheduled closures with Membership Services staff.
- Ensure lifeguards are performing their daily tasks, interacting with members during rotational breaks, remaining alert when maintaining surveillance over the pool area, and maintaining compliance with all YMCA policies, rules, and regulations.
- Assist the Aquatics Director with department needs including developing staffing and program schedules, planning special events and activities, hosting Lifeguard Certification and Recertification Classes, and administering staff CPR training for the facility.
- Coordinate staff breaks and meal periods to keep employees engaged and compliant with local laws and YMCA policy.
- Attend and assist in the administration of all staff meetings and trainings.
- Assist the Sandpoint Sharks in all Swim Team operations including practices and meets.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be able to work some evenings and weekends
- At least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current certifications in: Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens/Preventing Disease Transmission.
- Administering Emergency Oxygen, YSL or WSI, and Lifeguard Instructor Certifications preferred.
- Two years of related experience in aquatic programming and youth development preferred.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Completion of YMCA required training upon hire.
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
