GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of Streets and Stormwater Division Manager, performs a variety of general maintenance, service and repair on the city sanitary sewer, storm drain, street, walkway and parking lot systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs sanitary sewer, storm drain, streets, walkways and parking lot installation and maintenance. This includes but is not limited to: paving, leveling, chip seal, crack seal, concrete work, striping, snow plowing, sign work, flagging, weed abatement, flood control, pipe installation, pipe repair and vac/jet truck work.

Places signs, barricades and other traffic control devices around work sites to protect employees and the public.

Operates light, medium and heavy equipment such as: street sweepers, loaders, backhoes, trackhoes, rollers, fork lifts, mud jacking equipment, vac/jet trucks, pavers, dump trucks and other similar equipment. Performs maintenance on assigned equipment. Detects and reports mechanical problems with equipment to the Motor Pool Division.

Uses hand and power tools such as: jack hammers, saws, grinders, air compressors, wrenches, weed trimmers, pruners, hammers, shovels and other similar equipment.

Must be able to report to work on time as scheduled and abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to deal with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner in all circumstances.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Requires moderate to heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull or lift medium to heavy weights. Required to work in difficult working positions. May have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods

Exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, chemicals and fumes, and prolonged high noise levels. Often works in and around vehicular traffic. May at times include exposure to high stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.

Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. May be required to work unconventional work hours or shifts.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent. Required to obtain training and education with flagging and forklift operation. May require training in signing, flagging, forklift, equipment operation, pavement marking, herbicide application, trenching, shoring, confined space, chlorine use or other related work.
  2. Ability to: work in all weather extremes in wet, muddy and icy conditions and perform manual tasks for sustained periods of time; perform minor/major equipment maintenance and repairs.
  3. Special Qualifications: 2 years as Level 1 Road Scholar or 4 years experience. Registered Stormwater Inspector within 4 years. Must possess a valid Class A-X Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the ability to obtain tanker and hazardous material endorsements. Traffic Control techni cian. CPR certified.
