Utah Valley Dispatch 911 Emergency Dispatcher in SPANISH FORK, Utah

Job Description

Under general supervision from the Performance Development Supervisor and direct supervision from Senior Dispatchers, learns the job responsibilities and skills of an Emergency Communication Officer, fulfilling call answering, call interrogation and call documentation responsibilities, and then each radio dispatching responsibility.   This is the training classification focusing on learning and becoming proficient with the duties of the Emergency Communication Officer.

Typical Duties/Requirements:
  • Attend and participate in all assigned dispatch academy and on-the-job training processes approved and required by the District.

  • To attend and successfully complete all courses related to obtaining District required dispatch certifications.

  • Receive 911 emergency and non-emergency calls.  Process and evaluate incoming calls through structured interrogation of callers, obtaining critical information quickly.

  • Make an initial assessment of the nature and urgency of the call.  Record and relay information for police, fire and medical services to the radio dispatchers.

  • Exercise good judgment and logical thought patterns in emergency situations and under heavy workload.

  • Utilize medical protocol systems for providing life saving pre-arrival instructions, i.e., CPR.

  • Utilize fire protocol systems for providing quick and efficient assessment and response assignments.

  • Gain control of calls, obtain callers confidence by actively listening and remaining calm, convey objectivity, compassion, and confidence and communicate effectively.

  • Operate Computer Aided Dispatch system to record all calls received.

  • Query databases, records, and previous calls from CAD for public, management and officers.

  • Process requested information from state and federal UCJIS system related to wanted persons, driver's license checks, motor vehicle checks, warrants and protective orders.  Relay information to appropriate agencies and/or personnel.

  • Take messages and makes work related calls for on-duty public safety personnel.

  • Make a variety of calls relating to vehicle dispositions, wrecker requests, parental/relative notifications, etc.

  • Monitor equipment and report needed repairs through the appropriate channels.

  • Enter NCIC data and maintain entry files for user agencies.

  • Maintain all required dispatch certifications by completing service training hours.

  • Follow policies, procedures, guidelines and instructions as provided. 

  • Utilize appropriate interpersonal skills in communicating and interacting with the public, co-workers, supervisors and managers, and others in the performance of the job duties.

  • Maintain confidentiality with information obtained through employment.   Issues discussed in relation to employment, personnel matters and investigations are to be held in strict confidence and not divulged without management permission.

Working Conditions:
  • Work schedule requires overtime, nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Work is confined to an immediate work area that requires continuous staffing.
  • Sit for long periods, using telephones, computers, which require some extended read-ling and repetitive motion, and two way radios.
  • Time is spent at computer display terminals, viewing several monitors and observing traffic patterns.
  • Work involves sensitive telephone contact with the members of the public, who may be hostile, emotional, unstable, or physically or mentally distraught.
  • This safety sensitive position requ ires the ability to deal with times of high stress due to medical and other emergencies.
  • Light physical effort required.
  • Regularly required to sit or stand, bend and move about the facility.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to be Peace Officer Standard and Training (P.O.S.T) certified.  Please review the certifications requirements, before completing an application.
  • Submit a completed initial application.
  • High school or G.E.D. and 18 years of age.
  • Be able to type 40 words per minute net.
  • Possess clear oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to act and think clearly in emergency or pressure situations. Testing will be performed to assess this ability.
  • Possess the skills or abilities necessary to operate radio and telephone communication equipment
  • Full-time Position requires working day, swing, and graveyard shifts, as well as holidays and weekends.
  • Must have and maintain the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI certification)
  • Must obtain and maintain the Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitations (CPR) certification.
  • Must have the ability to listen and/or give instructions while quickly and accurately entering information into the computer aided dispatch (CAD) system by using a keyboard and completing other tasks as needed.
  • Ability to wear a headset and speak in clear and concise English. Able understand follow and recall complex verbal and written instructions and information.
Additionally:
  • A background investigation will be conducted on all applicants considered for employment.
  • A multitasking skills test will be administered.
  • An oral interview and a drug screen test will be given prior to employment.
  • Prior dispatch experience is preferred, but not necessary.
  • Any training, education, or certification which is relevant (such as CPR, EMD, or other POST training, etc..) would be helpful but is not required for hire.  Once hired certifications will be scheduled as necessary.
