Job Description
This manager is responsible for leading, overseeing and guiding the development, implementation and execution of communications programs the AbbVie Bay Area site in South San Francisco, CA, a key oncology center of innovation for AbbVie. The primary role will be to develop and drive unique communications programs that support site leadership, drive site employee engagement and increase local awareness of AbbVie within the community and beyond. In addition, this manager will be responsible for enhancing AbbVie’s reputation locally. This role reports to the Senior Director, AbbVie Bay Area Strategic Management.
Core responsibilities in this role:
Responsible for setting the overall communications framework for the AbbVie Bay Area site.
Responsible for defining thought leadership platforms for AbbVie executives at site level.
Responsible for internal communications; inclusive of channel management, site townhalls, site leader communications, etc.
Responsible for identifying and executing programming that drives engagement of priority employee audiences.
Represents Communications on local crisis action teams.
Responsible for developing and executing internal and external communications tactics that drive awareness of AbbVie within the local biotech ecosystem.
Partners closely with cross-functional partners that support local community engagement, local brand awareness activations.
Interfaces and aligns with various functions, including local human resources, government affairs, legal, finance, discovery research, clinical development, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, and senior management.
Supports management of agencies and associated program budgets that support communications programming.
Qualifications
Core skills and experience:
High competency and professional experience in internal and external communications strategies and tactics.
Experience providing communications counsel and strategic materials to senior leaders for both internal and external audiences.
Business acumen to appropriately frame the why and contextualize communications priorities that strategically align to business priorities.
Scientific knowledge, ideally in oncology, or experience understanding complex concepts and translating them for target audiences and channel.
Expert understanding of digital and social media content and channel strategies.
Experienced in employee engagement, change management and crisis management communications.
Ability to build relationships and interact with local media in the Bay Area market in partnership with R&D Communications and Media Relations teams.
Understands how to operate with an enterprise mindset and proactively seeks out opportunities to maximize impact of communications.
Ability to breakdown silos to nurture strong cross-functional partnership with scientists and non-scientist colleagues, as well as partner with corporate colleagues in a matrix environment.
Models’ leadership ways of working that foster collaboration, creativity and collegiality.
Strong sense of accountability of direct and indirect team members, and associated communications programming of the team.
Basic requirements needed:
Minimum of 5+ years of integrated communications experience required.
Previous work in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry required, experience in oncology and managing communications at a site level preferred.
Demonstrates expertise in developing and executing insight-driven and measurable internal and external communications programs and materials.
Ability to successfully execute multiple communications activities for a diverse range of stakeholders; understanding of employee audiences.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Experience working with agency resources to deliver high quality, effective communications.
Demonstrates growth mindset, self-motivated, and ability to see bigger picture beyond the immediate task.
Demonstrates initiative, creativity, analytical and leadership capabilities.
Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team and navigate a matrixed organization; influence/negotiation skills and relationship management capabilities.
Experience using commonly used communication tools like Teams, Zoom, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Movie Maker, Acrobat, etc.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
