The Bureau of Human Resources is accepting applications to establish a register to fill a vacancy located at the Long Creek Youth Development Center.

Position Overview:We are seeking a Training Corporal to oversee the Juvenile Program Worker (JPW) cadets at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, ME. The work involves supervision and training of cadets and other staff performing security, management, treatment, and rehabilitation support activities of justice involved juveniles detained at or committed to Long Creek.

Key Responsibilities:(A position may not be assigned all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be assigned).

  • Develop and refine the JBCTP curriculum and annual training topics using adult learning principles.

  • Instruct cadets in foundational knowledge and essential skills for working with justice-involved juveniles.

  • Oversee the Job Shadow and Juvenile Basic Corrections Training Programs.

  • Monitor, mentor, and assess cadets' progress and performance throughout their training.

  • Support recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new staff as needed.

  • Perform duties under general supervision, including responsibilities as a Correctional Corporal.

Representative Tasks:

  • Direct, observe, and evaluate daily activities of staff-in-training to ensure compliance with operational procedures and that work is done in alignment with the department’s operational philosophy and mission.

  • Design, plan, organize, and direct orientation, training, and drill modules to deliver education and on-the-job training that results in licensure/certifications, verifies competent work performance, and achieves operational goals.

  • Monitor, evaluate, and document training activities and program results to identify needs, develop alternative training methods, and adjust program activities to optimize effectiveness of training and staff performance.

  • Select, assign, and evaluate instructors conducting training and testing activities to promote consistency with program deliverables, refer instructors to skill development classes, and determine effective training modes.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey information and instructions to cadets, staff, and stakeholders.

  • Strong critical thinking abilities to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and solve problems effectively.

  • Experience in coaching and providing constructive feedback to staff, fostering their professional development and performance improvement.

  • Thorough knowledge of criminal code, laws, rules, and regulations pertinent to the Department of Corrections.

  • Familiarity with judicial system processes, courtroom procedures, and rules of evidence.

  • Proficiency in curriculum and training design, instructional techniques, and assessment methods.

  • Understanding of departmental policies and standard operating procedures.

  • Knowledge of Maine Criminal Justice Academy statutes and certification requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

In order to qualify, you must have Two (2) years of experience as a Correctional Officer and demonstrated experience coordinating, training, evaluating, and supervising others.

Certification to Vacancies
