The Town of South Hill has a job opening for aMechanicin the Fleet Department. Must have a valid Virginia Driver's License, Valid Commercial Driver's License (A or B), a Valid Virginia State Inspection Certification (or the ability to obtain State Inspection Certification within one year of position appointment).
This positionperforms skilled routine and non-routine work in a variety of tasks relating to maintenance and repairs of the Town's fleet including automotive, construction vehicles and equipment; all work is performed under close supervision of senior shop mechanic and/or fleet supervisor.
Essential Job Functions:
Performs tune-ups on automobiles, trucks and other mechanical equipment using appropriate test equipment according to appropriate maintenance schedules. Change spark plugs and wires; distributor cap, rotor button;Adjusts carburetor, if needed;Pressure testing fuel system;Clean fuel injectors, if applicable;Performs preventative and routine maintenance and work on gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, differentials and other units and mechanical equipment according to appropriate maintenance schedules;Inspects all fluid levels, such as water, oil, antifreeze, battery, transmission, differential, etc. and adds or replaces as appropriate;Replaces all fluids, such as oil, hydraulic, antifreeze, transmission, differential, etc. according to schedule;Replaces all filters, such as oil, fuel, air, etc.;Lubricates/greases bearings and universal joints;Check brakes, replaces pads and/or shoes as necessary; Check brake lines;Checks basic elements of electrical system for proper working condition;Follows guidelines as outlines in the appropriate maintenance manual;Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on small engines, mowers, weed eaters and all Town-owned engine or motor driven equipment in accordance with equipment manual;Sharpens or changes out mower blades;Prepares inventory request form for all parts, tools, and equipment required;Responsible for cleaning and returning all tools and equipment to tool crib. Responsible for all tools and equipment assigned or allocated;Tests maintenance and repair work to ensure satisfactory results;Operates in a safe manner and maintains and repairs all equipment used in performance of job requirements;Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work environment;Perform other related tasks as required or assigned.
Physical Demands:
The work is very strenuous, which requires exerting of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move/life objects.The following physical abilities are required: Balancing, Crawling, Bending, Lifting, Grasping, Pulling, Pushing, Reaching, Standing, Stooping and other physical movements as needed. Wearing safety gear and equipment as supplied and required by the Town.
