What the day will look like
Work closely with Catastrophe Insight team to prepare Impact Forecasting’s Cat Reports.
Develop and conduct statistical analysis to discover natural disaster loss trends on both a global and regional scale. Conduct research to strengthen Aon’s historical natural disaster loss database and utilize the data to help in the development of new catastrophe models.
Collaborate with Impact Forecasting Tropical Cyclone R&D team during development, testing, validation, and implementation of models.
Aid in the development and deployment of real-time catastrophe model solutions.
Interact with other R&D teams, analytics teams, brokers, clients and academia throughout the Asia-Pacific, US and Europe regions as required.
How this opportunity is different
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to become part of our Impact Forecasting team based in Singapore. The team of 150 plus members based globally in 5 offices (Prague, London, Chicago, Singapore, and Bangalore) consists of scientists, developers, and client services colleagues, developing and supporting catastrophe models for various natural and human-made perils including flood, windstorm, earthquake, fire, terrorism etc.
This role involves working with Catastrophe Insight and Tropical cyclone R&D practice groups. The role will focus on development of natural catastrophe models quantifying risk due to tropical cyclones for re/insurance applications and as such, successful candidate is expected to understand catastrophe risk model development methodologies, become proficient in the ELEMENTS platform; and understand general catastrophe modeling practices and features. As a territorial contact for catastrophe insight team, this role will also involve assisting APAC reinsurance brokers and clients prior/during/after catastrophe events.
Skills and experience that will lead to success
PhD or Master’s degree in a relevant field (Meteorology, Climate science, Atmospheric science, Hydrology, Water resources, Geography, Geophysics or equivalent)
Relevant experience is desired. Recent Master’s / PhD graduates with excellent problem solving and communications skills are welcome to apply. Designation, role, and responsibilities are assigned based on previous relevant experience.
Strong foundation in mathematics and knowledge of probability and statistics.
Strong understanding of global weather & climate trends with an emphasis on APAC; strong forecasting abilities utilizing numerical weather models and satellite data
Excellent proficiency in one or more scientific programming languages (Python, R, MATLAB)
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with all levels within the corporation and various business units. Strong team player but capable of independent work
Strong analytical thinking and willingness to learn.
Technical writing and editing skills & able to communicate clearly in a written and verbal manner.
Requirements – Good to have
Prior experience in re/insurance industry and application of climate conditioned catastrophe models
Peer-reviewed scientific publications related to climate change and climate risk.
Experience with numerical modelling of natural processes is an advantage.
Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS or QGIS
Ability to communicate complex ideas in simple terms, experience with visualization and communication of risk.
