Jamestown Sklallam Tribe Vessel Operator - Fisheries Monitor in Sequim, Washington
Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe is seeking a qualified Vessel Operator/Fisheries Monitor to support the fisheries, research, and management activities of our Natural Resources Department. This per-diem position will oversee marine vessel operations and assist in monitoring commercial fisheries.
Essential Functions:
Field Operations: Operate marine vessels (up to 40 ft.) for various activities, including:
Dungeness and Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge research and management
Shellfish and finfish harvest monitoring
Dive surveys and research
Crab and shrimp test fisheries and research
Habitat and resource enhancement and restoration
Water quality and biotoxin sampling
Vessel Safety: Ensure safe and efficient vessel operation by:
Inspecting vessels and equipment
Utilizing navigational equipment and weather forecasts
Maintaining U.S. Coast Guard required safety equipment
Providing clear directions to deckhands and passengers
Geoduck Monitor: Serve as the primary backup monitor for the geoduck fishery, including:
On-the-water monitoring of fishery compliance
Confirming diver participation and recording harvests
Ensuring compliance with Washington Department of Health requirements
Responding to diver emergencies
Assisting with harvest planning
Providing boat and equipment maintenance support
Adhering to JST policies and procedures
Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent
WA State Boaters Safety Card
Completion of Motorboat Operator Certification/Training Course (MOCC/MOTC), or equivalent
Demonstrated ability to safely operate a vessel up to 40 ft.
First Aid/CPR Certification (or willingness to obtain)
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of a Safety at Sea and/or Cold-Water Survival course
Experience with dive operations and dive safety
DAN O2 Certification
HAZWOPER certification
American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply.
