Your Specific Responsibilities:

The Health Educator is a highly responsible position working as part of a team. This position is directly linked to the following DOH-Highlands strategic priorities: stakeholder satisfaction and community health improvement. The Closing the Gap program seeks to help eliminate health disparities around chronic diseases and targets low income, uninsured, underserved groups and minorities in Highlands County. This position works in collaboration with many health initiatives and programs at DOH-Highlands and offers health education programs for DOH-Highlands staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work well with others as a team.

  • Ability to communicate fluently in English and Spanish, both verbally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of community-based health promotion planning and basic marketing principles.

  • Ability to use various audio-visual equipment, computer applications, and software programs, such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

  • Ability to develop and present training and educational materials.

  • Basic knowledge of diabetes and the diabetic diet.

  • Basic knowledge of chronic disease self-management principles.

  • Ability to provide health education in group or individual settings.

  • Ability to participate in educational or in-service training programs as an attendee or instructor, demonstrating healthy practices, giving talks, and developing or selecting educational materials.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds, use a dolly, and work in a warehouse-type environment, as needed.

    Qualifications:

  • High school diploma

  • Fluent in Spanish, both verbally and in writing

  • 1 year working with nutrition, diabetes, and/or wellness programs.

  • Current Florida driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
