Job Information
Amazon UX Designer, Amazon IT UX in Seattle, Washington
Description
The Amazon IT UX team develops solutions that enhance productivity for employees at the world's largest company. We build tools that do everything from helping new hires onboard to helping tenured employees find new software tools or connect with an agile workspace. Our work is challenging and our customers are highly diverse, but the scale of our impact can be matched by few other teams.
UX Designers collaborate closely with Product and Engineering core team members to translate business needs into customer value. Designers often partner with UX Research and Business Analytics partners to gather data and validate design concepts. Design projects vary from defining solutions for entirely new needs to refining experiences to enhance usability to building solutions that integrate emergent technologies into workflows. We work in a dynamic landscape and are passionate about evolving experiences for the world's largest employee base in innovative ways.
We're looking for someone passionate about advocating for employee experiences, who relishes bold exploration and learning, and who seeks to bring cross-functional partners along as they experiment and ideate. This is a great opportunity to build skills and take on progressively more challenging projects in an environment that values building relationships and smart integration of research data and design concepts over pixel perfection.
Key job responsibilities
This role will support strategic design needs for two portfolios, eventually settling into one. This Designers will help Amazon updates and build new tools to support Amazonian productivity as we return to the office full time. Experiences we are actively planning include a mobile application, desktop application, and in-person experiences at IT offices around the globe.
We are seeking someone who is passionate about building for our broadly global customers (we encourage travel to connect with customers outside of Seattle), and in supporting the diverse needs of our employees, including designing to meet WCAG accessibility standards.
We are flexible with job level for this role and can consider a Senior UX Designer for this position as well.
Key job responsibilities
Drive design jams and ideation sessions to flush out project details and steer stakeholder alignment.
Develop design collateral, including design concepts, storyboards, personas, journey and process maps.
Integrate stakeholders in a collaborative design process to refine wireframes and design specifications.
Leverage research partners to develop understanding of customer mental models, validate design concepts, and evaluate shipped designs. Participate in understanding customer experiences.
A day in the life
The Amazon IT UX team is highly collaborative. We each have ownership over individual projects, but build mechanisms to stay closely engaged. A typical day might look like:
Start the day with focused time developing design concepts.
Attend a mid-day meeting to share ideas for a new customer experience as part of the team's Design Critique and then engage your project's Core Team in exploring a competitive design or wallowing through a data dashboard.
Have lunch with the team-- a local Vietnamese street food restaurant is a team favorite. But Fridays are no-meeting "Team Days" where we rotate who picks our work location and lunch spot, so you never know.
Take an afternoon meeting with a mentor or 1:1 with a team mate.
Round out the day with a Design Jam whiteboarding session to help a teammate ideate solutions for an emerging need.
About the team
Historically, these have characterized us as a team:
Continuous learning: We have a team bookclub and take one day a month as a Day of Learning. We say that everyone has the opportunity to attend a conference each year.
Inclusion: We are in the unique position of supporting a truly global audience. Travel is not required for the role, but we value cross-cultural connections and encourage it for people that are comfortable traveling.
Balance: Designers do their best work when they have flexibility in how they approach it. We switch work locations once a week, we don't just talk about work-life balance, and we're flexible with times of day.
