The National Primate Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Training & Compliance Specialist to join their team.

The primary purpose of this Training & Compliance Specialist position is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology.   • CommunicationUnder the general direction of the Associate Director of Animal Resources Division, the Training & Compliance Specialist will design, coordinate, document, deliver, and maintain the training program for staff to learn to perform technical skills for preventative animal health maintenance, clinical care, and research support of non-human primates (NHPs), in addition to administrative support activities. This position will perform these responsibilities according to established WaNPRC standard operating procedures. This position will uphold established requirements for animal health, psychological well-being of nonhuman primates, safety programs, and research protocols, consistent with the existing federal, state, local and university regulations. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive quality assurance program at the WaNPRC to facilitate rigor and reproducibility, with the goal of performing IND-supporting studies. This position will work closely with husbandry, veterinary, behavioral, research support, operational personnel and the Training & Orientation Coordinator to ensure that procedures are performed in a standard, reproducible manner. Other responsibilities include maintaining documentation to all reconstruction of research activities. Duties include but are not limited to:Employee Training Program (50%)

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive employee training program focused on technical skillsets for all employees interacting with animals at the center.

  • Develop and coordinate processes for retraining and recertification on a routine and as needed basis for current employees.

  • Work with Training & Orientation Coordinator to maintain tracking system for training requirements and compliance.

  • Coordinate or perform timely and appropriate training/retraining for employees.

  • Communicate with other departments to identify and unify training and documentation processes.

  • Assist and identify select personnel for training advanced technical skillsets in accordance with best practices.SOP Review and Documentation Updates (20%)

  • Review SOPs to ensure appropriate content. Update when needed.

  • Oversee training program materials, SOPs, and documentation.

  • Ensure all department practices are in alignment with SOPs, addressing and retraining for drift over time.

  • Review standardized trainings listed in Hoverboard and ensure employees assigned to duties are compliant.Quality Assurance and Post-Certification Monitoring (20%)

  • Walk through animal facilities and evaluate personnel during job duties, monitoring adherence to SOPs, areas for retraining/improvement, etc. Prepare a written evaluation with specific action items.

  • Work with key personnel to ensure action items are completed.

  • Monitor husbandry, veterinary, behavioral, research support and lab personnel to ensure SOP compliance and appropriate technique. Identify areas where activities are not in alignment with current training methods.

  • Work with managers/supervisors to retrain personnel or update SOPs as needed.

  • Perform recertification assessments of all personnel on a routine basis.Miscellaneous (10%)

  • Serve as member on relevant committees, workgroups and task forces.

  • Make recommendations and report as required regarding Training and Orientation expenditures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Education, Health & Safety, or related field.

  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of applicable work experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrate competency with scientific principles and demonstrate fluency in laboratory terminology and methodology.

  • Experience writing and revising Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Excellent presentation, written, and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to productively manage multiple projects concurrently under deadline pressure and changing priorities.

  • Ability to work effectively and with sensitivity and discretion in animal model research setting.

  • Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with a diverse staff and with research investigators.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software suite.

  • Strong organizational skills. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in curriculum development, training and/or teaching diverse groups of personnel or experience working in higher education institutions.

  • Knowledge of USDA regulations, NIH guidelines, PHS policy and IACUC function.

  • Basic knowledge and understand of non-human primate health and behavior.

  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATg) certification.
