The Department of Pathology at University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary/Hourly UW Student Assistant, working 19.5 hours per week when school is in session, and 40 hours per week during school breaks, for up to six months. This position will perform a variety of clerical tasks relating to Anatomic Pathology in our Histology department.

Duties

  • Manage and maintain scheduled equipment maintenance needs.

  • Accurately sort, scan slides using Epic Beaker system and deliver to trainees and pathologists.

  • Manage the preparation and distribution of renal kits to various clients.

  • Repair broken slides and pallets as part of laboratory quality control.

  • Running errand for department includes frequently picking up and dropping off specimens, packages, supplies and other materials needing transport within the department unit.

  • Receive, unpack, and perform inventory of laboratory supplies.

  • Prepare various laboratory reagents to use in laboratory procedures which includes the use of PH meter.

  • Be able to accurately sort file blocks and glass slides.

  • Manage and maintain laboratory binders.

  • Perform computer tasks such as data entry, scanning and metric documentation.

  • Be able to practice safety measures when boxing and pick up broken glass waste.

  • Wash glass wares needed in various protocols in the laboratory.

  • Support the general preparations for laboratory inspections.

  • Perform other duties as assigned. Employment Eligibility: In accordance with UW Employment and Administrative Policies, Chapter 104, Student Employees, to hold an appointment in one of the covered student job titles a student must be enrolled at the University of Washington and meet the following minimum enrollment requirements (not including correspondence credits):• Undergraduate students - 6 credits• Graduate and professional students - 4 credits• Ph.D. candidates working on dissertations - 2 credits• Granted "on leave" status• Minimum 6 months clerical work experience required. Desired: • Knowledge of medical terminology• Able to set priorities and be flexible; can accomplish work despite frequent interruptions and changing work priorities• Numerical filing and recordkeeping experience• Proven attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and follow-up, and ability to work independently with minimum supervision• High degree of patience and easy going/positive attitude with ability to handle long periods of daily repetitive work Conditions of Employment: • Read print with size 9 font for long periods of time• Capable of lifting 15-20 lbs as needed• Reach objects in shelves, drawers, and equipment at a height range of 4” to 72” above the floor• Well developed communication and interpersonal skills; able to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing• Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), as well as Internet usage.• Prepare reagents, unpack and put away supplies and help in equipment maintenance.
