The Department of Biochemistry has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer to join their team.

This Research Scientist 2 position will support research project exploring the mechanisms underlying toxicity of yeast prios.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform research in protein folding, focused on the conformational transitions of prions proteins in yeast and their cellular regulation. 70% • Perform routine and help develop new techniques in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and genetics. • Perform routine and shared tasks to support the functioning of the lab as needed, including reagent and glassware prep, lab organization, inventory, etc. • Presenting results at scientific conferences. 10% • Writing results for publication in international journals. • Train undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers in laboratory techniques 15% • Providing research training for HS students. 5%

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelors Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry and two years of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Competence in standard protein biochemistry techniques (extraction, gel electrophoretic analyses, stability assays, etc) • Competence in standard molecular biology techniques (recombinant DNA, PCR, fluorescence microscopy, etc) • Competence in data and standard statistical analyses • Excellent organizational/record-keeping skills • Excellent interpersonal skills • Competence with computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud • Ability to critically evaluate scientific literature • Self-motivation

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous experience with yeast • Working knowledge of mathematical modeling of biological systems.
