Description
The Worldwide Capacity Planning team is looking for a Research Scientist for their Forecasting Science team. Here you'll develop cutting-edge algorithms that transform complex analytical insights into powerful business solutions. You'll design and implement innovative and automated end-to-end forecasting solutions to support planning, and address critical demand challenges and service quality metrics.
The ideal candidate will be an innovative problem-solver with exceptional communication skills, and passionate about turning data into meaningful organizational transformation, leveraging techniques like machine learning, econometric modeling, time series forecasting, statistical inference, and optimization to directly impact our bottom line and elevate our global customer service capabilities.
Key job responsibilities
Drive model development and improvement with a combination of econometrics, statistics, machine learning and analytical techniques to create scalable solutions for business problems.
Collaborate with product, software engineering, research science, data engineering, and business leaders to build algorithms and models.
Design, develop and evaluate of highly innovative models for forecasting problems.
Identify business problems, and formulate scientific solutions.
Use the best practices in science: data integrity, design, test, and implementation and documentation.
Contribute to Amazon's Intellectual Property through patents and internal and external publications.

About the team
Worldwide Capacity Planning optimizes capacity across operations sites that help minimize customer wait time and route customers to the associate who can best resolve their issue, on the first contact. We build forecasting models and optimization tools that help predict the hourly capacity requirement, including when there are new device or game launches, or when there is a special event, such as Prime Day.
Basic Qualifications
PhD or equivalent Master's Degree plus 5+ years of experience in Statistics, Mathematics, Machine Learning, Economics or related field.
2+ years of experience of building models for business application.
The ability to implement models and tools through the use of modeling languages (e.g. Python, R, Matlab) or more traditional languages (Java, C++).
Experience with Time Series Modeling and/or Predictive Modeling techniques.
Experience/Familiarity with Hierarchical Forecasting.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively advocate technical solutions to research scientists, engineering teams and business audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated research experience in either Causal Inference, Bayesian Modeling, or Optimization with a proven track record of publications at well-regarded conferences and journals.
Experience with cloud computing products.
Expertise on a broad range of machine learning methods, 4+ years of experience of building machine learning models for business applications.
Excellent problem-solving ability. Demonstrable track record of dealing well with ambiguity, prioritizing needs, and delivering results in a dynamic environment.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $212,800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
