The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Consultant.

The Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute (ADAI) is a multidisciplinary research institute in the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. The Institute’s staff of clinical and social psychologists, epidemiologists, public health experts, and information specialists work to improve our understanding and reduce the harm caused by alcohol and drug use. Our mission is to advance research, policy, and practice in order to improve the lives of individuals and communities affected by alcohol and drug use and addiction.

The Center for Community-Engaged Drug Education, Epidemiology and Research (CEDEER) at ADAI joins research with the “real-world” to generate innovative, evidence-based, and person-centered responses to the use of opioids, stimulants, and other illicit substances. Our goal is to collect and share knowledge gained from research, local data, clinical expertise, and personal lived experiences of people who use drugs. This knowledge is used to improve policies and services to reduce substance-related harms and improve the lives of people impacted by substance use.

The WA State Community Drug Checking Network (CDCN) is a project of CEDEER and a partnership of more than six organizations around WA State that provide community-level drug checking and related harm reduction services. CEDEER provides technical assistance, training, and operational support to the network, in collaboration with Public Health – Seattle & King County and the WA State Department of Health. The project is funded by the WA State Health Care Authority.

The primary goal of the project is to improve individual and population health. Secondary goals are to provide insights into the contents of the local drug market. The role requires an understanding of and experience in statistical analyses and database management. It also requires a general understanding of public health practice, epidemiology, health education, and harm reduction. This project is directed by Dr. Caleb Banta-Green, and team members include a research scientist, project manager, and operations manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Data Collection for Analysis (30%) • Support the design, use, and manipulation of large participant survey and chemical analysis databases for data analyses. • In partnership with the CEDEER team, develop and operationalize detailed statistical analysis plans to achieve project goals. • Comprehend and interpret complex data files. • Complete complex statistical analysis of data using R (preferred), SAS, or STATA or other comparable statistical software.

Data Management (40%) • Generate database queries/reports. • Proactively manage databases and acquired data, ensure accuracy of data and participate in quality control activities. • As needed, serve as a liaison between the project team and data sources to communicate data needs and facilitate data delivery. • Assess and analyze project aims and milestone goals and provide input in the development of appropriate work timelines based on available data. • Other duties as assigned.

Data Dissemination (30%) • Create, update, and manage online data visualizations for ongoing and ad hoc analyses. • Design, test, and implement methods and formats for data reporting. • Lead and co-author reports and manuscripts.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in Epidemiology, Health Services, Public Policy, Social Work, or related field AND at least 2 years’ experience in a related area or equivalent with at least one year of experience with data management, analysis, visualization, and report/manuscript authoring OR equivalent education and experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Experience with database management. • Demonstrated ability to participate productively in interdisciplinary research teams. • Strong quantitative aptitude, desire to learn new skills and information, and ability to interpret complex analytic quantitative information and relevant contextual data to create appropriate analyses. • Experience with Tableau or similar online data visualization application. • Familiarity with HTML. • Experience with scientific writing and interest in making significant content contributions to manuscripts and presentations as well as technical reports for sponsors or partners, especially with presentation and visualization of data. • Ability to work effectively with all partners and team members, including experience working with people with diverse social identities, and working across differences with cultural humility. • Excellent oral and written communication skills. • Experience with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. • Strong sense of focus and attention to detail. • Demonstrated organizational skills, self-motivation, flexibility, strong communication skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Health Services, Public Policy, Social Work, or related field. • At least one year of experience with secondary analysis from existing large datasets. • Experience working with harm reduction programs or directly with people who use drugs. • Experience working with epidemiological, public health, health care, or substance use data. • Experience in statistical analysis. • Experience with R (preferred), SAS, STATA, or other statistical programming language. • Experience with HTML and JavaScript.
