Position Complexities: This position will be designing, overseeing, and implementing day-to-day programming for student veterans and military family members requires a holistic approach to meet diverse needs and experiences within the military community. They will also be ensuring the integration of unique needs and experiences of the military community into all activities, programs, and training initiatives necessitates a deep understanding of military culture and a tailored approach to onboarding and transitions, which will require a level of expertise in working with this population. They will also be managing the Veterans & Military Community Center (VMCC) and associated programming involves facility management, coordination of events, and advocacy for resources tailored to the specific needs of student veterans. This will also require a high level of coordination and collaboration with other campus units other off campus organizations that work and support veterans and the military community. Collaborating with external veteran organizations, attending conferences, and exploring and applying for grants involve external relationship management and resource acquisition.

The Program Manager for Veterans and Military Community Resources (Counseling Services Coordinator (E S 7)) plays a crucial role in positively impacting the university in several ways. The position contributes to creating a more supportive environment for student veterans and military family members on campus. By tailoring programs and services to meet the unique needs of this community, the university becomes more inclusive and welcoming. The programming and support provided by the Program Manager contribute to the academic success and overall well-being of student veterans. By addressing their specific challenges and facilitating a smooth transition to academic life, the position helps enhance the overall student experience. This position will help uphold the designation of the university as a Veterans Supportive Campus that is critical for maintaining a positive reputation. The Program Manager ensures that the university continues to meet the criteria for this designation, reinforcing its commitment to supporting veterans. Representation on university committees ensures that the voices and perspectives of veterans and the military community are considered in decision-making processes. This inclusivity contributes to a more diverse and representative governance structure. Collaborating with external veteran organizations and researching and applying for grants brings additional resources to the university. This external support can fund programs, initiatives, and facilities that benefit not only veterans but the entire university community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Veteran-Focused Programming and Student Service Advising

  • Conduct advising sessions and programming with students to guide them through university resources, both internal and external, as well as support services and VA assistance in coordination with other departments, such as Financial Aid, where the School Certifying Officials (SCOs) are housed.

  • Organize workshops and community-building events to foster a sense of belonging for student veterans and military families.

  • Collaborate with the Student Veterans Association, Vet Corps Member, Student Engagement and Activities, and other campus partners to design and implement military community-focused programs.

  • Collaborate and coordinate on events acknowledging student veterans, including Veterans Week, Memorial Week, Challenge Coin and Graduation Stole Ceremony, and others.

  • Assist student veterans in transitioning to academic/civilian life and meaningful careers, partnering with Career Services for relevant programming, workshops, and employer events.

  • Engage with off-campus military and veteran organizations for collaboration, including but not limited to WDVA, Veterans Training & Resource Center, UW Seattle, UW Tacoma, and other veteran-serving organizations.

  • Facilitate regular meetings, 1-on-1 and in small groups, with members of the military community to address their needs.

  • Support leadership and career-connected programs and initiatives for student veterans in collaboration with Career Services.

  • Coordinate veteran and military orientation activities in partnership with other Orientation and Transition Programs colleagues.

  • Participate in tri-campus coordination, including event coordination for Heroes for Hires, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.

  • Create curriculum and teach veteran transition seminar each fall.Advocacy and Awareness for Student Veterans

  • Actively advocate for UW student veterans and military family members.

  • Develop programs and materials to raise awareness of issues faced by student veterans and their families within the UW Bothell community.

  • Collaborate with UW stakeholders to ensure seamless referrals to vital campus services.

  • Provide training to faculty and staff on transitioning from military to civilian/academic culture.

  • Attend local and national conferences related to student veteran issues.

  • Collaborate with external veteran organizations to bring resources and opportunities to campus, including researching and applying for grants.Supervise, Advise, Recruit, Train, and Evaluate Student Veteran Staff

  • Serve as the primary supervisor and advisor for Vet Corps Member and VA Work-Study Students.

  • Engage in training to understand the unique needs of student veterans and military families.

  • Support the creation of a campus support committee for veterans and military families.Veteran Programming and Facilities Management

  • Manage the Veterans & Military Community Center (VMCC) space.

  • Advocate for facilities that cater to the specific needs of student veterans.Assessment and Annual Report for Student Veterans

  • Develop and implement assessment programs to identify student veteran needs.

  • Establish metrics for evaluating student veteran success on campus.

  • Monitor and assess usage of the VMCC.

  • Create assessment metrics for service delivery.

  • Report findings and activities for veterans in an annual report to the larger community.Other Duties

  • Support other aspects of OTP programs and initiatives.

  • Ensure representation of veterans and the military community on University committees.

  • Address other duties as required with a focus on the inclusion of this community.

  • Serve on University committees representing this community.

  • Attend and participate in university events such as Commencement, Convocation, Move-In Day, Admitted Students Day, and other. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Social Work, or a related discipline.

  • At least 3 years of professional experience working with student veterans and military families in a higher education setting or related field.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated experience in program development, implementation, and assessment, particularly in veteran-focused initiatives.

  • Comprehensive understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by student veterans and military family members during their academic and career transitions.

  • Familiarity with VA resources, support services, and benefits available to student veterans.

  • Cultural competency training or experience, particularly related to military culture and the diverse experiences within the veteran and military family community.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with student veterans, military families, and various stakeholders.

  • Proficient in organizing and conducting workshops, community-building events, and outreach activities.

  • Proven ability to collaborate with diverse campus units, including Student Veterans Association, Vet Corps Member, Student Engagement and Activities, Career Services, and other relevant departments.

  • Demonstrated advocacy skills for student veterans, including the ability to raise awareness of issues faced by this community within the university setting.

  • Experience collaborating with external veteran organizations, attending conferences, and staying informed on relevant issues. DESIRED REQUIREMENTS

  • A master's degree in a relevant field such as Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Social Work, or a related discipline.

  • Certification or training in veteran support services, counseling, or a related field.

  • Experience in grant writing and securing funding for veteran-focused programs and initiatives, with a proven track record of successful grant applications.

  • Training or certification in mental health support, counseling, or related fields, particularly with an emphasis on issues faced by veterans and military family members.

  • Prior experience in supervising, advising, recruiting, training, and evaluating student veteran staff members, such as Vet Corps Members and VA Work-Study Students.

  • Experience in developing and implementing assessment programs to identify the needs of a population and establish metrics for evaluating their success.

  • Proficient in creating and presenting annual reports on assessment findings and veteran-related activities.

  • Familiarity with managing spaces dedicated to veteran and military community needs, such as the Veterans & Military Community Center (VMCC). CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This position requires occasional evening and limited weekend commitments that relate directly to orientation and veteran programming responsibilities.

  • There are periods of intensive programming throughout the year, primarily preceding with the beginning of each quarter, which may require additional hours beyond the normal workweek.

  • In addition, this position will have an open office within the Veteran and Military Resource Center, but will have a touchdown desk in the OTP central office as well.
