UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW Medicine, and research operations around the world, partnering with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service."

The Infrastructure Division within UW-IT, designs, implements and supports the essential IT infrastructure services and technologies that are indispensable to carrying out the University’s mission. They include the University’s wired and wireless networks, telecommunications services, computing and storage services, infrastructure tools and service delivery platforms.

The Network Specialist on the Wireless Design and Architecture team within the Infrastructure division works with other members of the team to coordinate communications and tasks required to complete upgrades to the Wi-Fi infrastructure in buildings on 3 campuses, residence halls, UW Medicine and other sites around the state of Washington. This position also completes tasks to ensure monitoring systems are updated, audits wireless hardware, and performs wireless surveys in buildings to ensure wireless deployments meet our standards and to help troubleshoot wireless performance issues.

This position will do the following to diagnose and/or to resolve issues.

  • Perform Wi-Fi surveys to assist in diagnosing performance issues in specific locations.

  • Update switch configurations to ensure APs are on the proper VLAN and POE settings.

  • Diagnose and repair ethernet connections supporting APs.

  • Replace failed APs.

  • May have to work with contractors at times to accomplish above tasks. REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Engineer, Computer Science, or related field or experience.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience working in a technical environment and engaging and facilitating communication between both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Experience working with construction documents and working with Computer Aided Design software (AutoCAD, BlueBeam, etc.) to review building design and AP placement.

  • Knowledge of configuration and installation of layer 2 switches, Wi-Fi access points.

  • Basic understanding of various network protocols including, but not limited to, DHCP, LLDP, POE, VLANs, and Wi-Fi protocols.

  • Knowledge of physical wiring standards, and ability to diagnose and repair issues.

  • Ability to perform Wi-Fi surveys using Ekahau with Sidekick hardware.

  • Proven ability to work constructively and adaptively within a fast-paced, demanding and expanding environment.

  • Must be self-directed and able to appropriately manage workloads, priorities, and provide timely communications to stakeholders and management.

  • Interact constructively with internal UW-IT team members, and peer units as well as external strategic partner staff including operational teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to form partnerships across disciplines and teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, with exceptional professionalism and confidentiality.

  • Familiarity with, or ability to quickly learn, University of Washington policies, procedures and systems.

  • Familiarity with online collaboration utilities such as Office 365 and Google applications.

  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, flexibility, strong detail orientation, and sound judgment.

  • Ability to manage multiple work assignments that range in duration and sensitivity, while prioritizing competing demands and changing deadlines.

  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.

  • Able to perform packet captures using Wireshark or other applications. DESIRED:

  • Basic knowledge of Wi-Fi terms and protocols

  • Familiarity with documentation tools such as Lucid Chart, Excel, Word, Google Applications

  • Previous experience supporting HPE-Aruba and/or Juniper/Mist wireless hardware and management platforms.

  • Understanding survey applications such as Ekahau.

  • Desire to learn about Wi-Fi and managing projects to further career development. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Hybrid, open office environmentThis position may require work outside of normal working hours, as necessitated by projects or events.This position also requires the ability visit and navigate areas that may be under construction and which may have uneven footing, stairs and small obsticles.This position also requires work in Hopitals and other healthcare environments.This position requires the occasional ability to lift 25 pounds.This is an essential position and is required to report to work when UW suspends operations.
