UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. Our teams can be organized into six main groups: Asset Management, Operations, Finance & Administration, Real Estate, Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations, and Business Intelligence & Technology. The three major units include Finance & Administration group which includes financial, procurement and sourcing, human resources, labor relations, payroll and training & organizational development, communications, and UW capital budgeting leadership to all of UW Facilities (UWF). Building Services delivers Custodial Services to the UW campus that provides exceptionally clean and sanitary environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the comprehensive Recycling & Solid Waste Management program.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a Manager, Custodial Services .

Custodial Services is a unit within the Building Services Department. Under general direction of an Associate Director of Custodial Services, the Custodial Services Manager is responsible for the management of a geographic work area on campus consisting of 25-35 custodial staff, 15-25 buildings with a total square footage of 800,000 to 1.3 million, and a supply budget of $70,000 annually. The Manager directs the day-to-day activities including assigning work, preparing the daily cleaning schedules, monitoring the productivity of staff, evaluating work assignments and completion of project work, providing building security to include unlocking, and locking buildings, and responding to employee concerns. The Manager works closely with Building Coordinators, Administrators, and other University staff in response to their organizational needs. Also serves as a frontline supervisor, has budgetary responsibility, and ensures quality control in assigned buildings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

(30%) Leadership

• Participate in fostering a collaborative environment with diversity as a core value. We are passionate about building and sustaining an inclusive and equitable working environment for all students, staff, and faculty. • Positively support all management directives and actively promote the purpose and foundational values of Building Services. • Conduct and document formal, regularly scheduled Quality Control inspections to determine cleaning needs, analyzing workloads, and creating job assignments for staff. • Identify maintenance issues and takes action to resolve them, report and act upon building security, maintenance, and potential safety hazards. • Ensure that power-cleaning equipment is maintained in proper working order. • Ensure availability of cleaning/sanitizing materials/equipment. • Promotes and ensures a culture that focuses on the practice of excellent customer service. • Maintain budget control for labor and materials. • Recommend projected needs for staff, supplies, and equipment. • Conduct and/or participate in fact findings and implement employee corrective action as required. • Attends Building Services and all other related meetings. • Ensure employees are recognized for exemplary performance. • Interview applicants and make hiring decisions.

(30%) Supervision

• Direct the work of a custodial crew that consists of supervisor(s) and custodians in around 15 to 25 buildings, ensuring that facilities are ready for business each day. • Ensure that staff are trained and in compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements. • Monitor, inspect and assess employee performance providing feedback necessary to meet performance standards. • Write and review performance evaluations with staff and when necessary, take disciplinary action. • Contribute to a team atmosphere in working with all internal/external customers and provide thoughtful suggestions for continued improvement in work processes.

(20%) Safety and Security

• Maintain safety standards, reports employee incidents and accidents, and unsafe working conditions. • Know and ensure that assigned staff comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment whenever required. • Conduct monthly safety meetings. • Assign building keys to custodial staff and maintain key security. • Conduct an annual key audit.

(15%) Training and Development

• Actively support the education, training, and development goals of assigned staff. • Ensure staff attend all required training and arrive on time as scheduled. • Pursue ongoing education and learning to increase and grow your own skill set and that of your staff. • Attend conferences and trade shows related to facility maintenance and management. • Participate in departmental process improvement, training and their implementation.

(5%) Other

• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements include:

• Bachelor's degree and two years of supervisory experience. • Strong problem-solving skills, including ability to make unbiased judgement. • Demonstrated experience working with a fixed budget. • Demonstrated ability to work within and support others in a customer-service environment. • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines with flexibility to meet changing needs and to handle anticipated and unpredictable deadlines. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; including creating reports, conducting meetings, training personnel, and ability to work well with others. • Demonstrated flexibility and composure; able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a culturally diverse environment. • Successful experience working with others outside one’s immediate group to accomplish goals. • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Tools: Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams and willing to learn and use other software. • Proficient using a department assigned work smartphone. • Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License or a license recognized as valid by the State of Washington

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

• Experience supervising a unionized custodial staff. • Experience supervising custodial services staff in an academic or large institution.

Conditions of Employment:

• Regular and predictable attendance. • Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment. • Ability to respond to emergencies outside of your normal shift and on weekends and variable work shifts. Occasionally works over 40 hours per week. • Ability to work a shift with a start time of 5:00am.
