The School of Public Health (SPH) has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director of Research Administration (payroll title: Grant and Contracts Manager/Specialist G9) to join their team.

SPH is comprised of five academic departments—Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Global Health (joint with the School of Medicine), and Health Systems and Population Health—along with 5 Interdisciplinary Programs housed in the Office of the Dean. Reporting to the Director of Finance & Research Administration, and working closely with the Associate Dean for Research, the Assistant Director of Research Administration serves as the School’s pre-eminent subject matter expert in pre- and post-award research administration policy, practice and compliance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Pre-Award Grant Review and Compliance (40%) Review and approve new grant proposals and contracts: • Perform skilled proposal review of eGC1s, proposal applications and related documents as the Dean of Public Health’s delegated authority. • Apply broad knowledge of UW and funding agency policies, to complex and diverse proposal applications, to ensure compliance with applicable School, University, and agency policies before approval. • Proactively identify non-compliant proposal packages and assist the investigators and their team with resolution.

Targeted Department Support (25%) • Take on a targeted set of proposals, or a specific post-award need, to ensure continuity of essential business during peak demand or a short-term staffing gap, and assist with orienting the new hire. • May advise and assist department teams with a complex or special proposal.

Research Administration Leadership (20%) The Assistant Director serves as a collaborative peer leader for the School’s research administrators. Exemplifying the highest standards of research administration expertise, the AD will: • Maintain a high level of knowledge of research administration compliance and best practice, including from national and local sources, and central campus units. Acquire and maintain mastery of the new UW systems and practices for research administration introduced during the University’s transition to Workday. • Lead in strengthening the skills and knowledge base in research administration compliance, best practice and the new UW systems, across the School, including through broad-audience informational updates, intra and internet, curating UW and external training opportunities, giving topic-based presentations and serving as an individual training and advisory resource. • Act as the School’s primary day-to-day contact with the Office of Sponsored Research and Grant and Contract Accounting on specific proposals and emerging policy issues. Assist departments with escalating issues, as needed, to assure timely and consistent central handling of contracts, awards, subawards and agreements. • Connect regularly with research administrators across campus for peer-sharing and problem solving. Lead and facilitate SPH research administrator peer groups, fostering connections, community and shared best practice. Work collaboratively with the SPH Finance Shared Environment, providing research administration expertise to help individual staff and faculty problem-solve grant-related questions and challenges submitted in UW Connect.

Strategic Research Priorities (10%) Partner with the Associate Dean for Research and the Director of Finance and Research Administration on initiatives to deliver strategic priorities and to grow and support the School’s research enterprise. Activities may include: • Project management, connecting with stakeholders, providing subject matter expertise. • Leadership and delivery of some specific projects, eg. Training Grant in a Box how-to guide and templates. • Coordinate match funding and proposal support opportunities. • Publicize novel funding opportunities and provide recognition for successful new awards within our community.

Dean’s Office Grants & Contracts (5%) • Provide direct pre- and post-award support for a very small grant portfolio in the Office of the Dean and Interdisciplinary Programs. • Provide technical review of Data Use Agreements (DUAs) and goods & services contracts, liaising with the Attorney General’s Office as needed; working directly with the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Research Administration, or related field. • Minimum 4-5 years of experience in research administration, including pre-award proposal submission and post-award administration of federal grants.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Prior experience should include preparing grant applications, including complex budgets and sub-awards, managing post-award research and reporting effort and cost share. • Extensive compliance knowledge, including the ability to identify and address a diverse range of review concerns across a broad set of grant and contract proposals. • Attention to detail and an ability to consistently meet key deadlines. • Insight, judgment and exemplary communication skills. • Ability to build and maintain collaborative peer partnerships; and to help research administration peers do their best work. • Ability to problem-solve and a desire to improve systems.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in Research Administration or related field, or professional research administration certification. • Prior experience in basic science research program in a large academic institution. • Working knowledge of UW policies and procedures for research administration and UW systems, eg. SAGE, Workday and Huron ECC.

CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The Dean’s Office provides a friendly, collegial environment that values inclusiveness and excellence along with work-life balance. Within that context, workload will not always be uniform and some aspects of this position’s responsibilities, particularly in pre-award proposal review and some post-award tasks, have hard deadlines from extramural sponsors, so flexibility to meet these deadlines would be required on those occasions. The position will be based in our new building, the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health. A hybrid model of in-person and telework is common at the School. Effective working models that include 100% telework may also be supported for this position.
