POSITION PURPOSE Located in Seattle at UWMC’s Roosevelt Clinic, the University Reproductive Care (URC) Laboratory is part of the URC clinical team and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Division at UWMC. The URC team offers patient centered, comprehensive care to individuals and couples trying to conceive a child or preserve their fertility. We are experts in treating both female and male reproductive disorders. Our expertise spans all forms of evidence-based infertility diagnostics and therapeutics, from advanced fertility-sparing surgery to intrauterine insemination procedures and in vitro fertilization.

The URC Laboratory is excited to announce an outstanding opportunity to an open full-time Embryologist (Research Scientist 2) position on the team. The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate excellent attention to detail and have sufficient technical skills in embryology laboratory techniques such as: gamete handling, insemination, cryopreservation, immunoassays, and laboratory quality control procedures. Additionally, the candidate must be a flexible team player with exceptional communication skills and compassion.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will have a critical role in the provision of services in the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility program (REI). Working under the general direction of the Laboratory Director and Laboratory Supervisor, the successful candidate will participate in all aspects of operations for the Embryology laboratory.

The successful candidate will contribute to quality assurance and quality control requirements, and will be responsible for ensuring environments are optimal for the safe handling, viability, testing, and growth monitoring of all reproductive specimens including oocytes, zygotes, and embryos. Additionally, the successful candidate must be a flexible team player with exceptional communication skills and compassion.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and maintaining SART data for assisted reproductive technologies, as required by federal law. The successful candidate may be asked to participate in research projects, presentations and publishing papers in assisted reproductive technologies, as well as in various corporate, state, and federally funded service and research grants.

60% Clinical lab responsibilities:

  • Daily quality control, Open and close lab, Media and dish preparation, Paperwork, Egg retrieval, Sperm preparation.

  • Egg denuding. Fertilization check, Embryo scoring, Assisted hatching, Micro drop insemination.

  • Tier 3 Skill Acquisition: Embryo cooling/freezing, Embryo warming/thawing, Egg cooling/freezing, Egg warming/thawing, Embryo transfer.

  • Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection into egg, Embryo biopsy, Testicular sperm extraction.40% Research collection, data analysis and processing:

  • The successful candidate will play a critical role in advancing research on reproductive health and fertility while ensuring smooth communication and meticulous record-keeping in both lab and patient care settings. The core responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing results: The candidate will collect, organize, and interpret data from experiments, clinical outcomes, and studies related to reproductive health, fertility, and endocrinology. This includes recording in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle results in the hospital's electronic medical records (EMR) system and reporting embryology results to patients during their IVF cycles. The candidate will utilize statistical tools to derive meaningful insights from biological data, ensuring accuracy and reliability for both clinical applications and research purposes.

  • Formulating conclusions and hypotheses: Based on analyzed research data and IVF cycle outcomes, the candidate will formulate logical, evidence-based conclusions to generate new hypotheses for future research. The development of these hypotheses will guide future experiments and projects, focusing on areas like fertility, menopause, and reproductive health. These efforts will also contribute to compliance reporting for various state and national organizations involved in reproductive research and healthcare.

  • Reporting research outcomes: The candidate will be responsible for synthesizing and presenting research findings in formats suitable for peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and internal reports. This includes preparing manuscripts and data visualizations, maintaining meticulous research and patient records, and collaborating with team members. Additionally, the candidate will regularly attend lab meetings to discuss progress, address patient care concerns, and ensure open communication with staff and healthcare providers. This collaboration helps ensure that research contributions are aligned with the clinical side of reproductive care.

  • Other research duties: The candidate will help identify funding opportunities from corporate, state, and federal sources, as well as private foundations. In this capacity, they will help provide input to our Grants team on REI grant proposals and the preparation of compliance reports to meet the expectations of funding agencies. Maintaining accurate research and patient billing records will also be crucial for budgeting and financial reporting. The candidate will process and reconcile patient billing, ensuring that all financial documentation is in order for both clinical and research activities. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience with embryology, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Technical skills in embryology laboratory techniques, including: Gamete handling, Insemination, Cryopreservation, Immunoassays, Laboratory quality control procedures.Experience in an appropriate field of technology or science or equivalent education.Experience as an embryologist, andrologist, or in the field of reproductive sciences is preferred but not required.Two years’ experience in a relevant role or working in a laboratory.
