The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician Lead. WORK SCHEDULE

  • High school graduation or equivalent AND three years of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience OR equivalent education/experience.

  • Completion of a phlebotomy course

  • Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification with the WA State Department of Health PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Informs supervisor of operational status and personnel issues and provides leadership to the Specimen Processing Services (SPS) staff. Performs the work of Clinical Laboratory Technicians (CLT 1, CLT 2) and assigns, instructs, and reviews the work of others. Communicates appropriately with staff and customers. Performs at a technical level on routine laboratory tests and/or laboratory processing and set up work which supports the operations of a clinical laboratory. Inspires and motivates subordinates by personal motivation, loyalty, enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards self, others, and the workplace. At a Technical Lead level, perform activities associated with venipunctures and capillary blood collection from patients, perform simple qualitative and quantitative testing using point-of-care test (POCT) instruments and testing kits, prepare specimens for laboratory testing and their transportation and performs other laboratory work which supports the operation of a clinical laboratory. Under general supervision, interacts with electronic health and laboratory computer systems and patients to collect blood, urine, and other similar patient material, performs the tasks in the preparation/setup of specimens for laboratory tests and other laboratory work in support of technologists, faculty, and students. Primary focus is the collection of blood and samples from patients and the pre-analytical handling and processing of patient specimens for diagnostic testing.? Responsible for receiving processing and distribution of routine and stat specimens for analytical testing. Operates laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, incubators, scales and loads specimens onto automated instrumentation (chemistry and hematology automated lines). Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the hospital in meeting JCAHO, CLIA and CAP accreditation standards. Communicate courteously and clearly with hospital and laboratory staff to resolve problems. Establish and maintain a positive attitude toward patients, patient care providers, self, others, and the workplace.Responsible for smooth day-to-day operations in the laboratory processing area:

  • Plans, organizes and assigns staff work assignments and breaks in a manner that maintains smooth workflow regardless of workload.

  • Organizes the work assignments and daily schedule to support area training activities.

  • Communicate with the supervisor concerning the lab’s operational status, training needs, personnel issues, and staff concerns.

  • Works with supervisor to review workplace procedures and policies.

  • Reports issues or concerns from other laboratory divisions or hospital staff through HC1 or other reporting mechanism i.e., Quality Improvement tracking mechanism, Incident Reports, or Patient Safety Network (PSN).Perform all Clinical Laboratory Technician 1 and 2 tasks:

  • Must be able to perform tasks on all benches in processing areas in order to oversee and fill in on all benches whenever needed during short staffing periods. Routine bench performance will allow for observation of areas for performance improvements for all staff.

  • Perform other duties as required or as assigned by supervisor or manager.Problem Resolution:

  • Solves specimen problems in a timely, thorough and accurate manner, providing appropriate documentation for supervisor review.

  • Makes constructive suggestions for improvements in the laboratory and staffing distribution.

  • Generates and reviews quality feedback forms with staff.

  • Keeps laboratory staff informed regarding specimen and/or handling problems or procedural changes.Training of New Staff and Continued Training of Current Employees:

  • Oversees training of new staff to ensure that training is completed and documented on a timely basis.

  • Provides and updates training materials.

  • Work with supervisor to perform, assess and document competency evaluations of current employees.

  • Provide communications about opportunities for continuing education to all staff.Safe Work Practices and Responsibilities:

  • Directs staff to ensure the workplace is clean, neat and professional in appearance.

  • Oversees and ensures that biohazardous precautions are followed at all times including the disposal of biohazard waste in a timely manner.

  • Wears personal protective equipment and ensures staff properly uses personal protective equipment as required.Computer Functions:

  • Performs computer functions required for completion of tasks, acts as a resource to others.

  • Ensures that specimen processing runs smoothly during scheduled and unscheduled computer downtimes. Understands how to use the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for problem resolution.

  • Upon completion of training, be able to accurately and appropriately perform laboratory billing rejection resolution to ensure timely submission. This includes maintaining the “MERGE” and patient identification correction documentation records, cancel and credit functions and resolution of duplicate charges.

  • Acts as a resource for SPS and the Informatics Division.Documentation:

  • Ensure that staff follows established departmental policies and division specific processes and guidelines at all times.

  • Integrates new or revised processes into the workplace.

  • Author new guidelines and job aids under direction of supervisor

  • Perform biennially review of current documentation per CAP requirements.Confidentiality:

  • Maintains patient confidentiality regarding all written, verbal and computerized patient information per UW Medicine requirements.

  • Maintains confidentiality regarding concerning staff and personnel issues.Other Miscellaneous Duties:

  • Helps to maintain, archive and retrieve records.

  • Reports equipment and or facility problems in a timely manner and provide adequate notice to staff.

  • Ensures refrigeration temperatures are monitored daily and takes corrective action in case of refrigeration equipment failure.

  • Resolves UI patient number and Doe patient problems.

  • Maintains and or notifies appropriate lead or supervisor of supply inventory needs; order as needed.

  • Provide safety checks of equipment, reagents or bench practices as needed.Specialized Roles:

  • Under direction of manager and/or supervisor, may serve in a number of specialized roles. These include divisional Quality Assurance, as a representative on committees to implement new systems or processes, as division’s envoy for specialized department or hospital related initiatives, and/or work on other projects as assigned by manager or supervisor.
