Mayo Clinic Faculty Position in Neuroimmunology Research in Scottsdale, Arizona

Responsibilities

The Mayo Clinic Department of Neuroscience is recruiting an outstanding mid-career scientist (PhD, MD/PhD, MD or equivalent) with strong training, expertise and experience in neuroimmunology and applies these to the knowledge, diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative and other aging-related neurological disorders. The ideal candidate is expected to have a history of extramural funding, high impact publications, as well as a proven record of collaborative team science endeavors. The ideal candidate will have a track record of discovery and application of basic science approaches including but not limited to model systems such as animal or human stem cell based models, cell biology, and/or genetic engineering to uncover neuroimmunological basis of disease and treatment thereof. They will be expected to develop and apply these tools for generating therapeutic applications in collaboration with other investigators and taking advantage of the innovative, translational environment at Mayo Clinic.

The selected candidate will establish a robust Research Program with a focus on the Neuroimmunology of aging, neurodegeneration, and other aging-related neurological diseases that integrates discovery and translational neuroscience. The program will collaborate with investigators from across Mayo campuses and build upon the many strengths of Mayo Clinic including the Departments of Neuroscience, Neurology, Immunology, Kogod Aging Center and Centers for Individualized Medicine (CIM) and Regenerative Biotherapeutics (CRB). There will be a strong emphasis on application of knowledge and platforms from this program to broad neurodegenerative diseases and aging with a goal to translating these applications to the clinic in a collaborative framework engaging with clinical departments, CRB, and Business Development. The ideal candidate will be poised to take advantage of large-scale, multi-PI RFAs from the NIH, DARPA and other agencies. The candidate will be eligible for Full Faculty privileges and will also be involved in the education of trainees. The position is intended to be located at the Mayo Clinic Arizona site.

THE DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSCIENCE is internationally recognized for academic excellence with a specific focus on understanding the etiology and developing diagnostic and treatment methods for complex neurologic diseases, including neurodegenerative dementias, movement, neurovascular, neuroimmune disorders and aging. The Department spans all Mayo Clinic sites and includes 28 primary faculty members, 62 allied health staff, 126 postdoctoral associates, and 36 doctoral students. Scientists within the neuroscience department have strong expertise in neurogenomics, neuropathology, disease modeling, molecular and cell biology, immunity, and experimental therapeutics. The Department faculty play key roles in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and other large-scale NIH-funded consortia. In 2023, the Department of Neuroscience received over $50M in funding, majority of which was from federal grants. Our faculty holds leadership roles on major NIH and foundation programs including but not limited to AMP-AD, CLEAR-AD, Dementia with Lewy Bodies Consortium, Tau Center without walls.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a PhD, MD/PhD, MD (or equivalent degree) with a sustained track record of success in extramural funding (current R01 or R01-equivalent funding as PI), publications, and collaborations with scientists and physicians. Appointment and academic rank will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications. Successful candidates will be at the level of Associate or full tenured Professor.
