Guthrie Cytology Prep Technician - Cytology/Histology - Per Diem in Sayre, Pennsylvania
Position Summary: Conducts specimen preparation and other related computer, clerical and technical functions under the direct supervision of the Cytology Manager or other departmental cytologist.
Education, License & Cert: Associates in Science in Medical Technology or physical sciences is required. Military training may be considered, or other alternate routes that meet NYS DOH MLT standards. Certification by the ASCP Board of Registry preferred or Board Eligible. May be grandfathered as MLT defined by State and Federal Regulations.
Experience: Experience in a clinical laboratory is highly preferred.
Essential Functions: 1. May be required to perform any, and all clerical functions, including specimen receiving and accessioning, patient registrations and all duties of a Cytology processor including competently and accurately preparing and staining all cytology specimens as needed. 2. Prepares GYN (gynecological) slides on the T‐2000 Thin Prep processor including reprocessing thin prep specimens as needed and as stated in policy and procedure.
Prepares NON‐GYN (non‐gynecological) slides from patient samples, i.e. urines, body cavity fluids, respiratory secretions, fine needle aspirates and other specimen types. 4. Prepares cell blocks from NON‐GYN specimens, needle aspirates and other specimens, when appropriate. 5. Performs staining of air‐dried slides with the Diff ‐Quick stain. 6. Uses great care to ensure correct accurate labeling, numbering, and appropriate processing of every specimen. Follows up with providers to obtain proper information/verification of specimen information received.
Stays up to date with current laboratory practices, procedures, and techniques. 8. Assists in training by demonstrating techniques or methods and explaining actions, when requested. This will include training of new incoming preparatory personnel. Involves complete training on the T2000, Sakura stainer and hood, as well as preparation of all incoming specimens. 9. Observes proper safety practices in performing job duties. 10. Maintains a clean, neat working area during and at the end of scheduled work periods. 11. Performs and documents any quality control procedures or maintenance and addresses any identified problems with QC or maintenance acceptability. Records temperatures, keeps records of stain filtration, quality and overall maintenance including the take down and maintenance of the Sakura Stainer. 12. Brings any problems of a technical nature to the attention of the Section Manager or cytotechnologist.
Checks level of laboratory supplies and reports shortages to Section Manager. Maintains overall inventory and coordinates removal of waste materials. 14. Maintains a professional, mature positive attitude while on the job. 15. Follows established Guthrie Clinic and Lab policies and procedures. 16. Performs other duties as assigned by Section Manager or Administrative Director.
