As the Wildland Fire Mitigation Specialist, you will assist with wildland fire mitigation programs as directed and supervised by the Wildland Fire Mitigation Officer. Duties shall include but are not limited to, conducting prescribed burn programs and mitigation efforts. Position will assume the role of Wildland Fire Mitigation Officer in their absence and supervise burn team members

  • Responsible for assisting the Wildland Fire Mitigation Officer with the planning, organizing and execution of fuel reduction and fire prevention burns utilizing environmentally sound practices. Duties include serving as Certified Prescribed Burn Manager during County prescribed burning operations. Responsibilities include the planning, timing, authorizing, and building of fire breaks, working with mechanical mitigation, evaluation of burn sites, performing post burn monitoring, and assuring the maintenance and readiness of fire equipment and apparatus assigned to the Wildland Fire Mitigation program.

  • Assist in supervising Sarasota County Prescribed Burn Team Members when on a prescribed burn or other wildfire activation, directing personnel, and contractors assigned to mitigation programmatic efforts. Provide programmatic work efforts, oversight, and assists with/delivers yearly competency training/education, while enhancing continuity of team members.

  • Assist with yearly property mitigation plan development encompassing prioritized properties and schedules to effectively mitigate fire potential in order or severity, risk, and availability.

  • Assist with database documentation program encompassing property mitigation efforts performed including potential timelines for continued future mitigation needs of managed property.

  • Assist with measures and considers programmatic impact to mitigation plans by severe weather events on managed properties.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

CJIS Clearance: **The successful candidate will be subject to an extensive background check(s) as a part of the hiring process.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

About You

To thrive in this position, you must have-

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Firefighter, Certified Prescribed Burn Manager or Land Management responsibilities.

  • Possession of the NWCG Firefighter Type II Certification along with the annual arduous wildland firefighter pack test completion.

  • Possession of a Florida Prescribed Burn Manager Certification.

  • Completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290), NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800.

  • Possess or obtain within 18 months of employment the Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations (S-390) course.

  • Possess or Completion of Wildland Fire Chainsaws (212) and State of Florida Certified Pile Burn certification within 2 years.

  • Valid Florida driver’s license

    Starting Salary Range: $52,936.00 - $60,000.00 based on experience.
