CITY OF SANFORD Safety Officer in Sanford, North Carolina
*Position: Safety Officer *Department: Public Works Administration *Hiring Range: (DOQ) up to $70,600 per year earned and paid on a bi-weekly basis *Closing Date: open until filled
Description of Work/Duties:
- Ensuring compliance with standards and policies; ensuring work site safety requirements are met; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
- Manages and provides oversight to the Public Works and TriRiver Water department's safety and health program.
- Develops safety and health initiatives; develops and updates policies and procedures to improve safety and health performance of the City.
- Determines safety and health training needs; conducts and/or coordinates training; maintains safety and health training matrix.
- Conducts periodic facility and work site inspections; identifies unsafe conditions; reports safety violations to appropriate management; recommends corrective and preventive measures to reduce the City's potential insurance and loss exposures.
- Monitors compliance with safety rules and regulations and any safety and health standards established in relation to OSHA regulations and any other federal and state regulations; monitors compliance with the City's safety policies and procedures.
- Conducts departmental safety meetings.
- Keeps abreast of OSHA regulations.
- Conducts new employee safety orientation.
- Serves and participates on various internal and external committees.
- Performs related tasks as required.
**Minimum Training and Experience: Thorough knowledge of employee safety programs, OSHA General Industry Standards and other State and Federal regulations, and risk management techniques; general knowledge of the City's policies and procedures manual; thorough knowledge in preparing detailed reports and maintaining records, use of standard office equipment and applicable software, use of equipment associated with the position; ability to make arithmetic computation, compute rates, ratios and percentages, conduct workplace inspections, assess risks and identify solutions, research, collect, organize, and analyze data, present ideas effectively both orally and in writing, establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, employees, supervisors and the general public.
**Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in safety, or related field and moderate experience in safety and risk management.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire. Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for position.**
