What you will do:
Receives patient fluids. Performs appropriate procedure. Processes specimens for each type of cytology.
Contacts/consults with appropriate personnel when difficulties are encountered in testing.
Prepares tissues for examination by pathologist/pathologists’ assistant (log specimens in computer, label cassettes, etc.). Collects specimens from surgery and/or physician offices.
Assists pathologist(s)/pathologists’ assistant in examining tissue for grossing and frozen section pieces and assists with fine needle aspirates.
Properly embeds tissues and positions tissue in appropriate cassettes.
Cuts tissue block, performs special stains and immunohistochemistry proficiently for evaluation by pathologist(s). Distributes slides to pathologist.
Performs frozen sections for pathologist(s) proficiently, including freezing, cutting, and staining. Can use the equipment appropriately (stainer, cover slipper, and embedder).
Performs appropriate quality control. Records workload.
Maintains supply inventory and submits timely requisitions for supplies.
Keeps abreast of current histology trends, practices and procedures through review of job-related publications, in-service education, etc.
Maintains all equipment and instruments properly, and alerts management to any faulty or malfunctioning items.
What you will need:
Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. Associate’s Degree, or equivalent, preferred. Previous experience in a histology lab or current on-the-job-training in histology required. HT/HTL (ASCP) preferred, or eligible to sit for the exam.
CPR/BLS certification preferred.
Ability to be mobile.
Ability to exhibit dexterity and to differentiate colors.
Ability to read and write small letters and numbers, with extreme attention to detail required.
Basic computer literacy.
Must possess a valid State of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license and be insurable under Firelands' auto policy. Employee must provide proof of personal automobile liability insurance coverage upon request.
Punctual attendance at assigned work location is required.
Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner and maintain an accident free work place, including ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of Medical Center emergency codes.
Ability to comply with OSHA regulations and CDC standard and transmission-based precaution recommendations and to utilize proper personal protective equipment. Ability to comply with provisions of applicable S.D.S. forms.
Successful completion of a ninety (90) day probationary period.
