Required Qualifications: Applicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, local and university regulations/policies on hazardous materials, biological material, radioactive materials, radiation producing machines, lasers, DOT and IATA dangerous goods, Hazard Communication, OSHA Lab Standard.

  • Skill in developing, writing and reviewing standard operating procedures and reports.

  • Skill in oral and written communication, and skill or experience utilizing mediation practices to reach compliance.

  • Experience in emergency spill response and knowledge of applicable OSHA regulations.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to work in variable conditions including heat, cold, and hazardous conditions.

  • Ability to use office and specialized laboratory safety software.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science such as Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Physics, Engineering or other closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten years experience in higher education laboratory safety.

  • Experience as or capability to serve as Radiation Safety Officer and Laser Safety Officer.

  • Experience working in radiation and/or laser safety in Texas.

  • Completion of RSO training course.

  • Completion of LSO training course.

  • 40 Hour HazWoper Training.

  • DOT Dangerous Goods Shipping Training.

  • IATA Dangerous Goods Shipping Training.

Job Description

Responsible for assisting in the management of the laboratory safety program for teaching and research laboratories and related areas. Promotes a culture a safety among students, faculty and staff.

Job Duties

  • Conducts general laboratory safety inspections for compliance with state, federal and local regulations as well as university polices.

  • Prepares, reviews and maintains inspection reports.

  • Conducts follow-up inspections for all noted deficiencies from lab safety inspections.

  • Prepares, reviews and maintains follow-up reports for each inspection.

  • Assists with risk assessments of laboratories for new researchers or as research evolves for existing researchers to ensure safe practices are being followed.

  • Conducts safety training for laboratory faculty, staff, students and volunteers with emphasis on General Lab Safety, Biosafety, Radiation and Laser safety.

  • Processes shipping requests for regulated dangerous goods.

  • Provides materials for waste collection/storage, sharps collection and broken glass collection.

  • Assists with providing resources and consultation to resolve safety issues in laboratories.

  • Sits on university safety committees such as Laboratory Safety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee, etc.

  • Assists with reviews of SOPs for high hazard chemical purchases to ensure safe use, storage and disposal as well as regulatory compliance.

  • Assists with updates of Lab Safety Division documents including UPPSs and safety manuals (lab safety, biosafety, radiation and laser safety, etc.)

  • Attends conferences, trainings, meetings, and seminars to remain current on developments in laboratory safety regulations, trends and best practices.

  • Assists Radiation Safety Officer/Laser Safety Officer with:

  • Any inspections, wipe tests, leak tests.

  • Maintain inventories of lasers.

  • Waste collection and disposal.

  • Review of SOPs and permit applications.

  • Disposal or surplus of lasers and radiation producing device.

  • Shipping and receiving of radioactive materials.

  • Assists Biosafety Officer with:

  • Any inspections.

  • Waste collection and disposal.

  • Review of SOPs, IBC , IACUC , IRB applications.

  • Performs other duties as assigned to support Lab Safety Division and EHSREM office
