Pacific Northwest National Laboratory PhD Intern - Wind Energy Systems Control and Design Optimization in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

We are seeking a highly motivated intern to collaborate remotely with PNNL scientists in developing advanced modeling and controller designs for the control and optimization of wind energy systems.

We seek a candidate with strong quantitative skills who is both a creative technologist and a proficient programmer. The ideal candidate should possess a systematic engineering approach and a passion for developing innovative technologies that align with project objectives. Strong communication skills are essential, as the role requires conveying technical insights through publications in leading peer-reviewed conferences. This internship offers a transformative experience, combining intensive technical development with practical applications in the design of controllers for renewable energy systems.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities will include developing sophisticated control designs for floating offshore wind farms, accounting for various atmospheric and system modeling uncertainties. The solutions developed will be pivotal in enhancing the efficiency and reliability of wind energy systems, thereby contributing to sustainable energy solutions.

This role also presents opportunities for comprehensive model development and system design, enhancing the understanding of wind farm dynamics. It provides a platform to explore and develop control design strategies, ranging from traditional methods to advanced predictive, data-driven controls utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in an Engineering Ph.D. program (Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil or related fields)

  • Strong understanding of renewable energy systems modeling, control, and optimization.

  • Experience in developing scientific software packages (Julia/Python)

  • Excellent publication record at top optimization, control conferences, and/or journals.

  • Strong background in control theory, particularly for linear and non-linear dynamical systems.

  • A strong understanding of optimization and libraries ex. IPOPT, CVXPY, etc.

  • Proficiency in Python, and machine learning libraries/tools (Pytorch, Jax etc.)

  • Familiarity with wind energy system design and modeling tools. (ex. OpenFAST)

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Good communication skills (written and spoken)

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
