Project Overview

Bechtel has been appointed by The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) to provide Construction Management Services for Phase II (BSVII) of The BART Silicon Valley Program. The Program extends the BART system 16 miles from City of Fremont in Alameda Country through the cities of Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara in Santa Clara County.

Phase II (BSVII) of the project is an approximately six mile, four-station extension, linking the Phase I terminus at the Berryessa/North San Jose BART station to the Santa Clara Station in the City of Santa Clara. BSVII is planned to include a single-bore tunnel, three underground stations, one at-grade station and a maintenance facility.

Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Field Engineer (Client Title: CP2 Inspector (Portal Shift 1)) to join the Construction Management execution team. As a candidate, you will bring experience and expertise to the role while working within the client’s organisation as part of an integrated team. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the integrated project team, including but not limited to Technical Authority. Provide constructability feedback and input, either directly or through consultation with discipline specialists.

  • Facilitate the inclusion of appropriate lessons learned into the development of the contract work packages.

  • Provide input to schedule preparation and monitor/report progress against schedule.

  • Assist in defining work package breakdown and definition of interfaces and identification of gaps.

  • Monitor the activities of contractors to ensure compliance with ES&H, quality requirements & project technical requirements. Undertake site inspection duties enforcing a “Zero Accident Philosophy”.

  • Monitor contractor progress prepare and process periodic progress estimates/ reports.

  • Coordinates and resolves engineering or construction problems in collaboration with the project technical authority. Assist in the review of technical submittals (drawings and other documents submitted by vendors.)

  • Organize, facilitate-participate, and provide input in project meetings. Communicate with other project stakeholders and prepare meeting notes/ project memorandums/presentations/status reports/ as appropriate.

  • Facilitate field measurements and quantity take off as the input into the monthly payment report.

  • Inspect work to ensure compliance with contract documents.

  • Coordinate with engineering, contractors, utilities, stake holders, client, and others as required to ensure a successful resolution to identified issues.

  • Interfaces with field inspectors (field engineers), subcontractors, engineering, clients and utilities aiding in the interpretation of engineering design documents, vendor documents, and other technical documents.

  • Coordinates engineering solutions with subcontractors, superintendents, and foremen.

  • Coordinates with design on constructability issues.

  • Supports as needed in the preparation of contract change notices and amendments, extra work orders, and back charge notices as assigned.

  • Understands and ensures compliance with Industry / International Codes & Standards.

  • Provides technical administration and supervision of assigned subcontracts.

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience on rail projects including utilities, rail, concrete, and earthworks is preferable.

  • Superior oral and written communication skills in English.

  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc.).

  • Able to obtain a Valid California Class C driver’s license within 60days of starting on project.

  • Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires a review of a variety of factors.

  • Demonstrates judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

  • Networks and connects with internal and external personnel in own area of expertise.

  • Minimal supervision with some latitude for judgment.

  • Possesses problem-solving responsibility while working under defined guidelines.

  • May assist less-experienced team members.

  • Proactively considers continuous learning or show interest to pursue appropriate learning activities.
