Job Summary

Within one of the nation’s most transformative universities, SJSU’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) fosters student opportunity in a revolutionary way by preparing students to maintain lifelong health and well-being. Under the general supervision of the Director of Health Services, the Campus Dietitian is an ancillary medical provider and is responsible for developing nutrition and food related counseling and collaborating to provide nutrition and body image outreach and health promotion. This includes population-specific disease prevention as well as nutrition and food-related trends. The incumbent supervises Nutrition-major interns and student assistants who support the Cooking Healthy Eating Well (CHEW) programming. The Campus Dietitian provides collegial and consultative support to other Student Wellness Center/SJSU staff, faculty, and student leaders/groups, including providing coordinated patient care with other providers within the SWC. Working collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all Student Wellness Center positions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct nutritional assessments, design plans of care, evaluate, and monitor medical nutritional intervention for SJSU students eligible for services through the SWC. Topics include, but not limited to: weight concerns, eating disorders, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, food allergies, performance nutrition, hypertension, heart disease, prenatal nutrition, general nutrition, digestive/GI issues, and dietary modifications

  • Keep abreast of clinical developments in the field of dietetics in order to provide current, evidence-based recommendations regarding medical nutrition therapy to patients and medical providers including physicians and nurse practitioners

  • Serve as an expert resource and coordinate with a multidisciplinary medical team, mental health counselors, and other SWC colleagues on patient care

  • Provide consultation and professional education to SWC staff and other campus colleagues addressing nutrition related topics

  • Participate in the Disordered Eating Care Coordination Team and serve as the primary resource for nutrition and dietetics

  • Assess, create, select, assemble, evaluate and distribute new and evolving nutrition and body image education materials tailored to the current needs of the campus community

  • Organize and implement outreach efforts designed to take nutrition education activities outside the SWC into residential halls, student organizations, meeting places, and classrooms

  • Develop curriculum and prepare manuals, visual aids, course outlines, and other materials used in teaching/training outreach events by student assistants and other SWC colleagues

  • Recruit, select, train, and supervise Cooking Healthy Eating Well (CHEW) student assistants and Nutrition Interns

  • Develop work schedules, approve timesheets, and provide evaluation of student assistants and Interns, as needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of a wide range of medical nutrition therapy for special medical conditions

  • Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary health care teams to address specific diet and nutrition needs

  • Knowledge of general principles, methods, materials, and resources for nutrition education and public information

  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment

  • Knowledge of assessment, intervention, and evaluation of nutritional status with appropriate care plans established to improve outcomes

  • Ability to use a full range of general nutrition counseling skills in performing the duties of the position

  • Ability to use a broad range of computer skills and software

  • Familiarity with medical charting and communication with clinical staff

  • Ability to prepare various documents including operations manuals and procedures, program and activity schedules, requisitions, proposals, and monitor budget

  • Ability to apply judgment and discretion to analyze appropriately and take effective action with tact

  • Ability to promote, organize, and facilitate group meetings

  • Ability to prepare, select, assemble, evaluate, and distribute nutrition education materials

  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition programs and materials

  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple work priorities and organize various projects

  • Knowledge with outpatient eating disorder treatment, evidence, and protocols

  • Ability to keep supervisor informed about goal progress and relevant campus partner initiatives

  • Ability to recommend initiatives and changes to improve quality of services/programs

  • Possess and maintain certification as a Registered Dietitian as defined by the American Dietetic Association

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a program approved and accredited by the American Dietetic Association (ADA)

  • Possess and maintain certification as a Registered Dietitian as defined by the American Dietetic Association.

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible community nutrition experience (completion of a one-year approved dietetic internship in a hospital or clinic may be substituted for one year of required experience)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Be Body Positive facilitator

  • Experience working with a higher education population

  • Experience providing nutritional counseling for clients with disordered eating and/or managing eating disorders

  • Experience overseeing nutrition education programming

Compensation

Classification: Registered Dietitian

Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,400/month - $6,700/month

CSU Salary Range: $4,152/month - $8,012/month
