Division: Executive Office

Section/Unit: Chief of Staff

Location(s): 1 South Van Ness, San Francisco, CA

Work Hours:  Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

The SFMTA, a department of the City and County of San Francisco, oversees Muni, parking and traffic, bicycling, walking, and taxis. Over one million people get around San Francisco and rely on us to ensure safe and reliable travel.

Mission: We connect San Francisco through a safe, equitable, and sustainable transportation system.

Vision: A city of diverse and vibrant neighborhoods seamlessly connected by safe, reliable, affordable transportation for all.

The Streets Division of the SFMTA plans, designs, implements, maintains, and improves the city’s street, transit, bicycle, pedestrian, and parking infrastructure. Our mission is to help San Francisco achieve the goals of the Transit First policy, which prioritizes the use of city streets by pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit; and the Vision Zero policy, which seeks to eliminate traffic fatalities and reduce severe injuries. Our work also supports San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan.

The Streets Division embraces innovation. We’ve created more than 32 miles of Slow Streets — safe, low-vehicle-traffic routes that prioritize people over cars — and partnered with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department to create seven miles of safe, recreational streets like JFK Promenade in Golden Gate Park. San Francisco now has 467 miles of bike lanes, including 45 miles of protected bike lanes, and is the safest larger U.S. city in the U.S. for bicycling. During the pandemic, we implemented the fastest expansion of transit-priority lanes in the San Francisco’s history. Thanks to these transit lanes, Muni is faster and more reliable than ever.

The Streets Division includes the following teams: Capital Programs & Construction; Livable Streets; Parking, Curb Management & Operations; Parking and Traffic Enforcement; Planning; Security, Investigations and Enforcement; and Transportation Engineering.
