National Park Service Maintenance Worker (Trails) in San Francisco, California

Summary This position is located in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, in the Facility Management Division. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately July - May, and you will be in a non-pay status at least 2 weeks during the month of June or up to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Responsibilities You will perform Maintenance Worker (Trails) duties at a high level of competency, often taking on the most complicated phases of project work assigned to the crew to include: Occasionally leading lower graded workers, volunteers, and Interns in carpentry, masonry, rigging, and motor vehicle trail maintenance related operations Transport tools, materials, employees, vehicles, and equipment with a variety of vehicles weighing under 26,000 GVW to job sites and trailheads Operate and maintain a variety of track type and rubber wheeled gasoline and diesel equipment such as front-end loaders, rollers, tractors with auxiliary attachments, utility terrain vehicles (UTV's), forklifts, dump trucks, mowers, mini excavators, and other types of equipment associated with support of Trail Maintenance related tasks. Intermittently leading and teaching lower graded employees, trails interns, volunteers and youth crews in all aspects of trail maintenance activities. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. Ability to lift 60 number of pounds. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel within the park bounties. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting and using hand and power tools in trail work. As examples of typical strenuous activity, the incumbent: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing 60 lbs. and occasionally lifts objects weighing up to 80 lbs., must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel and other hand tools extensively. Frequently hikes up to 4 miles daily and occasionally up to 8 miles and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools. Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors on high, narrow, steep, and congested trails at elevation that rises approximately 1000 to 2000 feet. May occasionally work in situations that require fall protection, such as on the sides of exposed cliffs or atop scaffolding. Work is performed in all types of weather and involves exposure to extreme heat, dampness, wind, dusts, and noise. Trail work is dusty. Hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, falling and bucking trees, and working around rigging equipment and machinery. Work will also require incumbent to work occasionally around and near Poison Oak.
