Airtable Engineering Manager, Infrastructure in San Francisco, California

We’re seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Application Platform team at Airtable. This team serves as the core interface for all other engineering teams, defining how we build, operate, and scale systems across the company. As the steward of developer productivity and reliability, your role will directly influence how efficiently we build, test, and ship our products. This is a highly visible role, and will report directly to the Head of Infrastructure. Teams are based in San Francisco and New York City.
What You’ll Do
Collaborate cross-functionally. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Engineering, and Business leaders to align platform efforts with strategic goals. Ensure that engineering solutions meet both technical and business requirements.
Build and grow a high-performing team by hiring top talent and coaching managers & senior ICs. Foster a culture of collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement within your team.
Scope
Developer Platform:
Lead the development and maintenance of tools, libraries, and frameworks to improve productivity.
Drive continuous improvements in developer workflows across build, test, and deployment pipelines.
Promote metrics-driven decision-making and establish best practices around code quality, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.
Experiment & promote the use of AI developer tools to simplify how we work.
Advocate for developers: Work closely with product and engineering teams to understand their needs, advocating for improvements that enhance their experience and output.
Observability & Reliability:
Design and maintain a large-scale Observability & Telemetry platform with real-time monitoring, logging, and alerting.
Ensure platform performance at scale to support multiple teams and evolving requirements.
Promote operational excellence through practices such as blameless postmortems, proactive issue identification, and limiting time spent on reactive operational tasks.
Who You Are
Platform Builder: Strong understanding of building and managing platforms that empower engineers to write, build, test, and ship software efficiently, safely, and reliably.
Technical Leadership:
Minimum 10 years of experience in software development, including at least 4+ years leading teams and being a manager of managers.
Must have led an org of 20+ engineers.
Strong experience with Bazel, TypeScript, and Rust, and the ability to guide teams working with these technologies.
Adept at mentoring and growing engineers, fostering a collaborative environment, and balancing people and technical leadership.
Operational Mindset: Hands-on understanding of observability, telemetry, and reliability engineering, with experience designing monitoring systems at scale.

Compensation awarded to successful candidates will vary based on their work location, relevant skills, and experience.

For work locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, New York City, and Los Angeles, the base salary range for this role is:
$305,600 — $396,000 USD
