Commander, Navy Installations MWR Assistant Golf Superintendent in San Diego, California

Summary This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department in the Navy Region Southwest. The incumbent is responsible for assisting with the total golf course maintenance operation, which includes golf course, greens, driving range, surrounding grounds as well as administration duties such as planning, budgeting, staffing, renovation, alteration, landscaping and equipment. Responsibilities Responsible for assisting the Golf Course Superintendent with golf course management including playing surface of the course, all tees, fairways, roughs, greens and surrounding areas; area management including entrance roads, parking lots, practice putting greens and driving ranges; landscaping including planning, planting and removal; structures including buildings, fences, bridges and shelters; equipment; personnel; materials; and associated records for course maintenance. Assists with the establishment of layouts and the development of reasonable time-related objectives for major and/or minor improvements. Assists in preparing drawings and sketches of proposed changes to the golf courses. Provides estimates for material and labor costs. Assists in the planning, renovating, landscaping, mowing, and maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, surrounding areas and appearances at an acceptable standard of golf course play; and maintains turf, plants, shrubs and trees. Ensures proper functioning of an irrigation system. Responsible for maintaining an adequate level for supplies and materials. Contacts vendors to obtain information regarding purchase of equipment, accessories, parts, fertilizer, insecticides, pesticides, seeds, sand, gravel and other materials, supplies and equipment required to run the Golf Division. Oversees the vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance program. Maintains accurate records of inventory and equipment repairs. Ensures preventive maintenance schedules are met. Recommends purchase, survey, repair and/or modification of equipment to the Golf Course Superintendent for approval. Reviews work assignments and determines work priorities. Checks work in progress and finished work for compliance with sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines. Ensures proper staffing levels. Answers questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives. Keeps supervisor informed on status and progress of work, causes of delays, overall work operations and problems that require corrective action. Assists with the training, supervising and scheduling of employees. Interviews and prepares necessary personnel action requests for hiring. Evaluates employee performance and recommends awards or disciplinary action to the Superintendent . Assists in the preparation of budget criteria for golf course maintenance. Ensures financial integrity is maintained for the operation and required reports and records are properly maintained. Assist in conducting periodic inventory of supplies and equipment as required. Performs other related duties as assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Four years of experience related to golf course maintenance. Knowledge of golf course maintenance principles and practices. Extensive knowledge of the game of golf. Knowledge of the available types and varieties of turf grass. Knowledge of the complexities and interrelationships of soils, fertilizers, irrigation, drainage, insects, insecticides, turf diseases, fungicides, weeds, herbicides, tools and equipment ranging from hand tools to complex hydraulically-operated fairway mowing units. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to plan, assign, train and supervise personnel. Knowledge of proper application of pesticides, possess or be able to obtain Applicators Pesticide Certificate within 6 months from date of employment. Knowledge of budget preparation and or financial management. Knowledge of irrigation systems. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively with others. College level studies in horticulture, park management, turf culture and related subjects are desirable but not required.
