BAE Systems Environmental Supervisor in San Diego, California

BAE Systems is hiring for an Environmental Supervisor to support from its San Diego, CA Ship Repair site. In this role as an Environmental Supervisor, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining programs for environmental protection and compliance obligations for all federal, state, and local regulations in a cost-effective manner. You'll have oversight of Best Management Practices (BMPs), participating in emergency planning activities, leading environmental incident investigations, integrating environmental programs in the production environment, conduct environmental training of employees.

Job emphasis includes hazardous material and waste management, air quality, SPCC, Over Water Transfers; Storm and Industrial Wastewater management; Environmental Management System (EMS) maintenance; facilities inspections; implement requirements for characterization, accumulation, and disposal of hazardous waste; and sample collection and preparation for laboratory analysis. As the Environmental Supervisor, you will collect and analyze data and maintain detailed records for submission of reports to regulatory agencies. Reports include, but are not limited to, submittals related to; Title V Air Permit; NPDES Permit and Stormwater; Biennial Reports for Hazardous Waste; TRI reports; Tier II; and others. You will have frequent contact with trades/subcontractors for work requiring interface with environmental program requirements including training of personnel and presentation of information.

Included supervisor responsibilities include assessing and organizing work tasks and assigning Environmental Technician job duties to ensure support of production activity and providing status reports and other information for management s review and assimilation into production and planning efforts.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain shipyard environmental programs including, but not limited to, stormwater, NPDES, hazardous materials/waste, SPCC, air quality, overwater transfers, emergency planning/response, and environmental BMPs.

  • Oversee/conduct inspections, internal audits, and subcontractor audits to maintain environmental compliance.

  • Review environmental discrepancies looking for trends and assign corrective actions to mitigate environmental risks.

  • Ensure that corrective actions from audits, inspections, CARs (corrective action reports), and incident investigations are completed and effective.

  • Maintain the site s ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification.

  • Oversee the preparation and submission of regulatory reports.

  • Communicate frequently with company employees, subcontractors, upper management, and customer.

  • Represent BAE Systems San Diego Shipyard during environmental inspections and audits.

  • Provide direction and training to subordinates, peers, trades, and subcontractors.

  • Oversee environmental technicians to maintain site environmental compliance.

  • Develop or assist in continuous improvement project implementation for pollution prevention, waste minimization and waste management activities.

  • Monitor performance of the BAE Systems employees and subcontractors working on vessels in other shipyards, terminals, or on military bases to ensure that the company is complying with the other facilities environmental policies and rules.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree in the Environmental/Health/Safety field, and 2 years related work experience or the overall equivalent experience.

  • Significant knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to environmental matters.

  • Knowledgeable in chemistry of hazardous materials/waste, training in hazardous waste management (California and RCRA), with practical skills in hazardous waste characterization.

  • Experience with data analysis and calculations/quantification.

  • Knowledge/expertise in evaluating laboratory reports including use of appropriate methods, reporting limits and results, and application against site requirements.

  • Knowledgeable in ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems, including experience in auditing of requirements.

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint).

  • Must be able to board all ships and enter all spaces regardless of size to complete inspections and ensure compliance of environmental rules.

  • Able to walk up and down stairs and work at heights, including using PFAS as applicable.

  • Must have a valid CA driver s license.

  • Must be able to obtain DBIDS access to Naval Facilities.

  • Knowledge/expertise of applicable Federal, State and Local Environmental regulations and standards.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to interact effectively with others.

  • Ability to handle physically demanding environments (rain, wind, heat, heights, confined spaces, etc.).

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER and annual 8-Hour refresher training

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Management

  • Certified ISO 14001 Lead Auditor

  • OSHA/Cal OSHA regulations

  • High degree of proficiency in MS Excel for data compilation/manipulation/analytics

  • Lean/Continuous Improvement experience

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $64130 - $109010

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
