We are looking for an Auditory and Vestibular Systems Research Scientist III to support the Directed Energy Health Effects (DEHE) Directorate at the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio TX. NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. The Directed Energy Department develops diagnostic tools to aid first responders/physicians in identification of distinct injury patterns caused by directed energy sources. These data are also used to establish guidelines to ensure the appropriate care and treatment for directed energy injuries is implemented.

Primary Duties:

  • Reverse engineer potential signals of interest from potential exposure scenarios and clinical findings

  • Determine experimental requirements based on hypotheses of interactions of directed energy signals (auditory and radiofrequency) with the cochlear and vestibular structures

  • Independently designs metrics and protocols using in silico, in vitro and/or in vivo preparations to meet experimental requirements.

  • Execute complex laboratory tests of the auditory and vestibular systems

  • Monitor and maintain real-time data collection capabilities to include molecular, electrophysiological and imaging modalities

  • Develop and implement new laboratory standard operating procedures

  • Test new instrumentation and participate in experiment design

  • Prepare proposals, reports, presentations, or journal articles communicating research activities and findings

  • Participate as a collaborating scientist in project proposal development and design

  • Oversees contract personnel associated with research projects; manages research data

  • Performs surgical and non-surgical procedures on animal models as needed for both survival and non-survival studies

What Sets You Apart:

  • PhD in a related field with 5 or more years of experience

  • Ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams with program managers, scientists, and engineers for experiment development and execution is required

  • Ability to obtain certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent. Web based classes do not meet these standards

  • Have or be able to obtain, and maintain, a Secret U.S. Government Clearance to be hired. Preference given to candidates who already possess this clearance level, but not required to have to start.

  • Due to Federal contract requirements, US Citizenship is required.

You might also have:

  • Experience in a military medical research laboratory (Preferred)

Pay Range:

Pay Range $101,400.00 - $183,300.00

Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
