Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineer in San Antonio, Texas

The Connectivity Platform team empowers every person and organization on the planet to achieve more by providing seamless connectivity to devices and services. The technologies we work on include Wi-Fi, Cellular (5G), Bluetooth, USB, Printing, Sensors, and more. This team works on full-stack development as part of the Windows operating system, as well as Azure service development following a "devops" model. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join our team.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a Princpal Software Engineer, with industry experience in wireless connectivity, peripheral connectivity, connecting devices to cloud services (i.e, IoT), that are passionate about learning new things and taking new risks. You will be responsible for the following:

  • Leads by example and mentors others to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products. Leads efforts to optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI). Identifies best practices and coding patterns and provides deep expertise in the coding and validation strategy. Creates and applies metrics to drive the quality and stability of code, as well as appropriate coding patterns and best practices.Leads efforts to apply knowledge of debugging tools, logs, telemetry, and other methods, and leads verification of assumptions through writing and developing code proactively before issues occur and reactively as issues occur across products. Leverages minimal telemetry data, triangulates issues, and resolves with minimal iterations. Leads retrospective debugging of solutions to identify root causes of problems.

  • Reviews the code of a product to assure it meets the team's and Microsoft’s quality standards, is reliable and accurate, and is appropriate for the scale of the product/solution area.

  • Apply feedback to current and future iterations. Participates in code reviews to ensure coding standards are followed. Considers diagnosability, reliability, and maintainability when reviewing code, and understands when code is ready to be shared or delivered. Applies and screens for coding patterns and best practices in reviews, and provides feedback on code to drive adherence to best practices.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C or C++ OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years technical written Coding, testing, and debugging skills in C/C++ 3+ years of experience working with wireless technologies (bluetooth, WiFi, Cellular etc)

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role.

Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in C or C++ languages

  • OR Master’s degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in C or C++ languages

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across groups

  • Technical problem-solving skills and willingness to learn proactively

  • Design skills with emphasis on system level programming

  • Demonstrated understanding of fundamental OS concepts

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated experience of shipping products

  • Demonstrated technical mentorship and leadership experience

  • Experience developing firmware for consumer devices like Wi-Fi Access Points or support for silicon (PCs, Mobile devices).

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
