Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Job Description
Diagnose, service, and repair various systems on heavy equipment, including mechanical and computer electronic controls, transmissions, computer-controlled automatic transmissions, and pneumatic systems. Troubleshoot malfunctions, repair, and service equipment including track drive sprockets, rails, idler wheels, hand bars, track adjusters, hydraulic systems, reverses, final drives, brake bands, steering clutches, and hydro static transmissions. Service and maintain speed tandem drive axles with air or electric shift, hydro static driven systems, and heavy-duty multi-axle suspensions. Perform diesel engine tuning, valve servicing, and fuel filter maintenance. Diagnose problems, disassemble units, repair or replace parts, and reassemble units in cooling, drive, brake, electrical, steering, heating, air conditioning, hydraulic, and air systems. Overhaul engines, replace engines, and rebuild components. Maintain a clean, organized work area and assist in training lower-level mechanics as needed.

Responsibilities
- Diagnose, service, and repair mechanical and computer electronic controls on heavy equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in equipment.
- Repair and service track drive sprockets, rails, idler wheels, hand bars, track adjusters, hydraulic systems, reverses, final drives, brake bands, steering clutches, and hydro static transmissions.
- Service and maintain speed tandem drive axles with air or electric shift, hydro static driven systems, and heavy-duty multi-axle suspensions.
- Tune diesel engines, service valves, and fuel filters, and maintain turbochargers.
- Diagnose problems, disassemble units, repair or replace parts, and reassemble units in various systems including cooling, drive, brake, electrical, steering, heating, air conditioning, hydraulic, and air systems.
- Overhaul engines, replace engines, and rebuild components.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work area in clean, organized, and functional condition.
- Assist in training lower-level mechanics in repair techniques.
- Perform related work as assigned.

Essential Skills
- Proven mechanic experience working on heavy machinery such as excavators, loaders, paving machines, backhoes, bulldozers, dump trucks, trenchers, compactors, graders, tele-handlers, backhoe loaders, tower cranes, feller bunchers, drag-line excavators, wheel tractor scrapers, pile driving machines, and concrete pumps.
- Mechanical, diesel, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic experience.
- Forklift repair and maintenance technician experience.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair independently.

Additional Skills and Qualifications
- Experience as a shop mechanic or mobile mechanic.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and construction equipment.
- Experience with heavy equipment such as backhoes and excavators.

Work Environment
This role may involve training in the shop for a few weeks before transitioning to the field. The work environment is non-temperature controlled, so candidates should be prepared for varying conditions.
