Job Description
Under supervision of the Vice Provost for Research and Health Sciences, the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Assistant Manager assists in organizing, managing, implementing, and maintaining programs in environmental health and safety.
Assists in the administration, promotion, development, presentation, training, and coordination of various EHS programs at the University to ensure research and laboratory compliance with System regulations, regulatory agencies, and national guidelines.
Develop training programs for students, faculty, and staff as required; participates in administration, promotion, training, coordination of safety regulations as applicable; work collaboratively with various units within the campus and TAMU system, and maintain documentation and metrics.
Responsibilities:
Develops biological safety resources, educational materials and fact sheets for university, college, department, and research activities; performs laboratory safety inspections; provide guidance and training for laboratory accidents, assists in the development and implementation of environmental health and safety programs to meet federal, university and Texas A&M System regulatory requirements.
Establishes documents and communicates standards, guidelines and procedures.
Conducts periodic assessments of the existing programs for regulatory compliance and recommends enhancements or modifications as required.
Maintains current knowledge on existing and pending legislation relating to environmental health and safety.
Contribute expertise to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) Committee and Laboratory Chemical and Physical Safety Committee on compliance matters related to research and teaching laboratories.
Communicate and collaborate with the Director of Research Compliance and staff, and with the Risk and Compliance Coordinator in the development and coordination of emergency response procedures.
Maintains metrics and reports as requested or required.
Liaises with regulatory agencies and the System Office.
Provides general laboratory support: dispenses and maintains biohazard signage, collection/testing materials and spill kits, maintain list of investigators and responsible for notification of exposures, incidents and accidental releases to proper entities, testing of autoclaves, annual certification of equipment, biosafety cabinet, and chemical fume hoods and laboratory hoods.
Coordinates the removal and disposal of hazardous waste from research and teaching laboratories.
Develops and implements emergency response procedures for incidents involving biohazardous agents and materials and maintains Texas A&M-SA Incident Action Plan for biohazards; develops medical surveillance criteria for activities involving biohazards and related materials; responds to biohazardous materials incidents as appropriate.
Conducts field audits for research compliance to ensure alignment with the university, system, and federal regulations.
Documents results and recommends corrective action where non-compliance is found. Follow-ups as required.
Performs other duties as assigned to include, but not limited to, Annual administration of blood borne pathogens program.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety, or related field.
Six (6) years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Master's degree in related field.
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and/or
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or
Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong computer skills.
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of EHS regulations as well as federal laboratory biosafety level regulations and guidelines.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
