The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Division of Aeronautics (DOA) has developed a robust and evolving Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) to support operations within multiple UDOT departments. UDOT is also a leader in aviation autonomy in advanced air mobility (AAM). The UAS flight coordinator will leverage existing UAS program developed tools, with the goal of assisting the AAM Program Manager, UDOT staff, and industry, to oversee and help manage all aspects of UAS UDOT operations.  The successful candidate will be a forward-thinking and innovative person to be responsible for supporting the goals and objectives developed by the AAM program manager. They will support the State of Utah s first UAS test site. Providing expertise in flight coordination and project management skills, while paying attention to detail. They will run several high-visibility projects in the Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) program, working alongside internal and external teams to prove out UAS technology, enhance transportation across urban, suburban, and rural areas.This position will play a critical role in supporting the development of AAM in medical/first responder response, drone package and heavy cargo delivery, and Air Taxis. This position is instrumental in Keeping Utah Moving and helping UDOT accomplish its mission to enhance quality of life through transportation. This role will include a significant amount of travel around the state in the support of AAM and therefore a valid driver's license is required Principal Duties As the UAS Flight Coordinator, you will:

  • Take direction from AAM Program Manager to manage projects with little direction to enable UDOTs mission of Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) concepts, while identifying challenges and executing on advancing the maturity of these concepts and their integration into the National Airspace System (NAS) and the international community.
  • Assist UDOTs UAS operations as UDOTs UAS Flight Coordinator. While establishing SOPs and best practices, establish a comprehensive UAS Pilot training program, and support missions as the Pilot in Command (PIC) on various projects.
  • Meet regularly with all UDOT pilots to develop skills and provide an opportunity for pilots to share ideas.
  • Manage UDOTs UAS operational performance dashboard and report as needed.
  • Work closely with the AAM program manager to document the growth of AAM.
  • Participate in working group meetings.
  • Promote the use of the sandbox environment.
  • Research the latest UAS developments and technologies.
  • Establish and maintain a record of all UAS fleet equipment.
  • Manage studies as assigned by the AAM program manager.
  • Lead meetings and conduct briefings about UAS operations with UDOT pilots, stakeholders, and vendors to manage the project s scope, expectations, messaging, and successful performance.

Minimum Qualifications In order to qualify, you must:

  • Have a Part 107 drone pilot certificate
  • Have a valid driver license
  • Have at least three (3) years of Uncrewed Aerial Systems
  • [Have experience with BVLOS waivers and understanding of UTM principles]{#isPasted}
  • Familiarity with the NAS and FAA regulations
  • Be willing and able travel throughout the State

Preferences Preference may be given to those with at least one of the following:

  • A bachelor s degree in aviation management, GIS, engineering OR equiv alent experience.
  • Preference may be given to those with a FAA private pilot certificate.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Here are some of the knowledge, skills and abilities that are typically associated with th job, though not all-inclusive:

  • Be proficient at customer/vendor engagement and capable of crafting briefing memos, meeting notes, reports, and white papers.
  • Proven program management skills from government or commercial sector leadership positions.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, able to translate technical findings into actionable plans.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with uncrewed and autonomous vehicle systems hardware, software, and related technologies.
  • Familiarity with aviation/AAM technologies and regulations.

Supplemental Information Here is some additional information you should be aware of:

  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
  • Working Conditions - Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, field measurement and recording devices, safety equipment, small parts; driving an automobile, etc. Some physical demands may be required to conduct frequent field inspection work.
  • Physical Requirements - Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc. May be exposed to high-speed traffic and walking on undeveloped portions of land.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
