Job Summary

PIONEER THEATRE COMPANY , Utah’s professional regional theatre in residence at University of Utah, has an opening on our staff for a motivated, skilled prop artisan. The prop artisan fabricates and assembles props, furniture, and set dressing for theatrical productions from a variety of materials using the appropriate tools and methods. Prop artisan should also be skilled in prop sourcing. Upholstery experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  1. Analyze sketches, blueprints (scale plans), and verbal instructions to determine the materials and equipment needed to build specified props for productions.

  2. Assist in the organization, maintenance, and inventorying of prop stock with the aid of ladders, pulleys, Genie lifts while carrying 50 lbs.

  3. Create props using appropriate tools such as hand and power tools, saws, industrial sewing machines, sergers, adhesives/fixatives, foam carving tools, pneumatic tools, metals, paint and texture products, and digital editing software (eg. Photoshop).

  4. Assist in the execution of prop rentals.

  5. Work within the priorities and limitations set by the Prop Master, Director of Production, Artistic Director, and Managing Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years previous prop making experience or related experience in scene design and construction; ability to read blueprints; ability to use hand and power tools; effective communication skills; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or Theatrical Set Design or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) preferred.
