Job Summary
The Marriott Library is seeking a graduate or advanced undergraduate student in computer science or a related field to assist with a grant-funded research project aimed at improving theMarriott Reparative Metadata Assessment Tool(MaRMAT), an open-source Python application developed for assessing problematic and outdated terms in library collections metadata. MaRMAT can currently be run in the command line or, for Windows users, in a GUI that has been programmed using tkinter. The tool’s design facilitates an easy-to-follow process for comparing metadata against a lexicon of terms. The hired student will work closely with Metadata Strategies Librarian Rachel Wittmann and Research Data Librarian Kaylee Alexander to make improvements to the beta version of MaRMAT with the goal of improving accessibility, UX design, and performance, as well as explore options for creating a web-based version.
This position will provide the hired student with practical application development and programming experience and hands-on research opportunities. Applicants should have proficiency in python and an interest in software development. The hired student will also have the opportunity to contribute to project documentation and dissemination, including presentations and publications related to this work.
The student will be hired for the Spring 2025 semester with the possibility of extending through Summer/Fall 2025 as needed. This is a hybrid position, with on-site hours in the Marriott Library and remote hours (based on a supervisors approval). On-site work will be required up to 50% of the time, with additional on-site time during onboarding.
For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception is granted.
