A Plumbing Technician is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems, including pipes, fixtures, and appliances in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. They troubleshoot plumbing issues, ensure systems function efficiently, and provide excellent customer service while adhering to local plumbing codes and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Installation of Plumbing Systems:
Install new plumbing systems, including pipes, fixtures, water heaters, and appliances.
Connect plumbing systems to water sources, sewage systems, and gas lines as required.
Ensure installation meets building codes, safety standards, and client specifications.
Repair and Maintenance:
Diagnose and repair plumbing issues such as leaks, blockages, or faulty fixtures.
Perform routine maintenance on plumbing systems to prevent future problems.
Replace worn-out parts such as washers, pipes, faucets, and other plumbing components.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:
Identify plumbing issues by using tools like pressure gauges, pipe cameras, and other diagnostic equipment.
Assess and recommend solutions for repairs or upgrades to plumbing systems.
Customer Service:
Communicate clearly with customers to explain plumbing issues and repair recommendations.
Provide accurate cost estimates for repair or installation services.
Ensure customer satisfaction by completing work in a timely and professional manner.
Compliance with Codes and Regulations:
Follow all local plumbing codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
Ensure all installations and repairs are in compliance with industry best practices and regulations.
Emergency Services:
Respond to plumbing emergencies such as burst pipes, severe leaks, and clogged drains.
Work outside regular hours if needed to address urgent issues.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent on each job.
Submit reports to supervisors or customers outlining the work completed and recommendations for future service.
Equipment Maintenance:
Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition.
Ensure safety procedures are followed when using tools and equipment.
Qualifications and Skills
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent (required).
Completion of a formal plumbing apprenticeship or vocational training (preferred).
Certifications:
Plumbing license (required in many states).
Additional certifications such as backflow prevention or pipefitting may be required or beneficial.
Experience:
2+ years of experience in plumbing installation and repair (preferred).
Experience in diagnosing and repairing a variety of plumbing issues.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, tools, and techniques.
Ability to read blueprints and technical manuals.
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Physical stamina to lift and maneuver heavy equipment and materials.
Work Environment
Typically involves working in homes, commercial buildings, or construction sites.
May require work in confined spaces, crawlspaces, or on rooftops.
