ARUP Laboratories Pathologists' Assistant Certified in Salt Lake City, Utah

Schedule :Monday - Friday (40 hrs/wk) 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM with possible evening coverage (flexible)

Department: Gross Dissection Lab - 371

Primary Purpose :

Provides services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Performs routine, specialized, and high complexity gross dictation and dissection of surgical pathology specimens. Provides direct assistance to staff and residents in the performance of gross dissection and is the technical “expert” in the Gross Dissection Lab. Provides direct assistance to staff and residents in the performance of postmortem examination.

Note: Applications will be accepted from candidates who are within 4 months of completing an accredited Bachelor of Science with a national certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant from the American Society of Pathologists' Assistants (AAPA), Or within 4 months of successful completion of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at a NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program with national certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant. All candidates must complete degree program and take and pass the ASCP certification exam prior to their start date. All official education and certification documentation must be submitted and verified.

Essential Functions :

Gross Dissection Lab

Triages surgical specimens in accordance with established procedures.

Preparation, gross description, and dissection of surgical specimens ranging from small biopsies to large and/or high complexity resections.

Performs frozen sections and histological submissions in accordance with current procedure.

Submit all work labeled appropriately, with all required paperwork and/or logs, and in a timely manner

Maintain the Gross Room in a clean, orderly, well-stocked and well-maintained manner.

Complete all necessary paperwork in a timely manner and in accordance with established procedures.

Serve as a technical resource in teaching dissection and descriptive techniques to residents and technical staff.

Responsible for the dissection for all specimens listed in AP-GR 2012 Gross Room Staff Authorization Policy.

Autopsy

Assists pathology residents and staff pathologists with comprehensive autopsy procedures (pre, during and post) at UUHSC.

Prepares for autopsy by receiving the body, obtaining necessary documentation, and setting up environment to facilitate autopsy procedures.

Maintains cleanliness of the autopsy suite by performing post examination cleaning and sterilization as per procedure.

Examines and dissects autopsy specimens specific to tissue type, anatomic features, and pathologic process as directed by the staff pathologist and residents. Submits tissue necessary for pathologic diagnosis.

Performs documents and reviews departmental quality control following appropriate procedures.

Assists in properly labeling, identifying, and preparing of autopsy specimens.

Other Functions

Develops and maintains scientific and technical expertise in the given laboratory areas. Contributes to lectures and staff in-service sessions.

Updates personal skills and knowledge to remain current and become efficient and proficient in the position.

Consults with the Medical Director(s) regarding technical issues when appropriate.

Participates in the evaluation of new products, reagents, instruments, and procedures. Continually strives to improve quality, efficiency and economy.

Attends in-services and meetings to assure job competency and communication within ARUP.

Performs assessment of peers performing non-waived testing as a Qualified Observer after two years’ experience.

Physical and Other Requirements :

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors.

Continuing Education: Continual assessment of current literature and best practices.

Qualifications

Education

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree or better in Pathobiology

Preferred

  • Master's Degree or better in Pathobiology

  • Medical Doctor (MD) or better in Medicine

Licenses & Certifications

Preferred

  • Path Assistant- ASCP

Experience

Required

  • Bachelor of Science with a national certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant from the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA)

  • Or Successful completion of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at a NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program with national certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant

  • Or Medical Doctor with boards in Anatomic Pathology

Preferred

  • Gross experience in an academic institution

  • One year PA experience
