State of Utah - Jobs Library Technician II, USDB in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) invites you to consider a rewarding employment opportunity with our agency that has variety built in! We are looking for an enthusiastic and caring Library Technician II who will not only process and handle library materials in our Educational Resource Center (ERC), but also, under the supervision of the ERC Library Program Coordinator, conduct weekly story time and approved Library Curriculum for students who are blind/visually impaired and deaf/hard-of hearing. The successful candidate will also have the diversity of working at our Salt Lake City campus. Roles and Responsibilities As a Library Technician II you:

  • Plan, schedule, develop and present weekly story time programs, and educational enrichment events for blind/visually impaired and deaf/hard-of-hearing students that fulfill the Library Media and Expanded Core Curriculum and/or the USDB mission.
  • Work primarily at the circulation desk to assist patrons (teachers, staff, students, parents and the general public) and fulfill their educational and informational needs.
  • Check materials in/out and shelves materials in the appropriate location.
  • Provide ready reference, research, readers advisory, and circulation services to patrons.
  • Travel between Ogden, Springville, and Salt Lake campuses is required.  Must be able and willing to drive as necessary.

Minimum Requirements The Ideal Candidate:

  • Must have the ability to plan and present storytimes in an engaging manner while communicating the story elements.
  • Must have the ability to apply principles, theories, practices and procedures of library science, MARC records, and the Dewey Decimal system, and the ability to work with the Destiny computer software system.
  • Knowledge of libraries and utilization methods to include categorization and classification methods, procedures for processing materials, systems for storage and retrieval of books, documents, and materials, etc.
  • Use reference indexes and information guides to catalog, file and retrieve library materials, and have knowledge of library materials housed in the ERC, and the collection.
  • Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Work independently and pay close attention to detail.
  • Assemble, sort, and/or distribute documents, supplies, and/or materials/items
  • Enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic forms
  • Use automated software applications
  • Prior experience working with children and sensory impairments is an asset.

    • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.

    • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System. 

      • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plan (pension and 401(k))

      • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.  

    • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

  • Paid Time Off:

    • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).

    • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service. 

    • We have 12 paid holidays.
