Job Summary
The Blackwood Laboratory at the University of Utah, Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and Training Institute ( CVRTI ) invites highly motivated candidates to apply for a Laboratory Specialist position. The successful candidate will be a well-rounded, enthusiastic individual with training in the broad area of biomedical sciences. The candidate should have experience performing research in a laboratory setting designing, organizing, managing and carrying out research. The incumbent will analyze research hypotheses using controlled investigations, experiments and/or trials for research on studies focused on cardiovascular disease using animal and cell models of cardiac pathology, with a goal toward translating basic science findings to clinically viable potential therapeutics. This individual should be detail oriented, conscientious, able to follow instructions, and have the ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner orally and in writing.
Responsibilities
1.
Administrative Duties:
Assist in maintaining and updating IACUC protocols along with experimental standard operating procedures.
Serve as the lab point of contact for vivarium staff and IACUC laboratory inspections.
Assist with financial management of lab as it relates to mouse colonies including reconciliation of lab expenses.
Assist with the maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies inventory.

Experimentation Duties:
Assists in management of all mouse colonies in close coordination with the PI and senior lab staff.
Oversees all mouse colony husbandry and genotyping strategies.
Contributes as a scientific team member to research projects that include several techniques related to small animal cardiovascular physiology that include, but are not limited to: microsurgical techniques (e.g. transverse aortic constriction, myocardial infarction, device implantation, etc.), necropsies, ex vivo experimentation (Langendorff isolated perfused hearts), hemodynamic measurements, isolation and culture of primary neonatal and adult rodent cell, and echocardiography.
Conducts components of research projects according to plan. Collaborates with senior lab staff to design research methodologies. Works on the collection of data and analysis of research results.
Identifies and recommends solutions to identifiable problems.
Other duties as assigned.

Cell & Molecular Biology Experimentation Duties:
Assists with tissue culture and passaging of cells for the purposes of mass quantity generation of adeno-associated and adenoviruses.
Performs cell & molecular techniques pertinent for mouse genotyping (i.e. PCR ) and ongoing lab projects.
Effort: 30%

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.

Preferences
Master’s degree: Physiology or related field
3-4 years’ experience performing experimentation in small animal models of cardiovascular disease with a focus on physiology monitoring
1-2 years’ experience in standard cell & molecular techniques and tissue culture
1-2 years’ animal husbandry experience in laboratory setting
