State of Utah - Jobs Geotechnical Engineer in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The Utah Department of Transportation is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Geotechnical Engineer (Engineer IV). In this position you will support geotechnical needs for maintenance and construction. You will oversee,review,and design for Project Delivery for projects that range from small permit projects to large design build projects. Principal Duties As the Geotechnical Engineer you will:

  • Perform geotechnical design and analysis for transportation projects

  • Prepare geotechnical reports

  • Perform geotechnical review and oversight for transportation projects

  • Perform geotechnical consultant oversight and reviews

  • Participate in updates and review of geotechnical aspects of UDOT construction specifications and the UDOT Geotechnical Manual of Instruction

Minimum Qualifications In order to qualify,the candidate:

  • Must be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
  • Will have at least two (2) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.

This position may be filled at the Engineer III level for applicants with less than two (2) years of post PE experience. In order to qualify for the level III,you must be registered as a PE in Utah AND have at least one (1) year of post PE engineering experience. Salary range for Engineer III is $36.55-$59.29.  Preferences Preference may be given to those with at least one of the following:

  • At least five (5) years experience in geotechnical engineering following licensure as a PE.
  • A Bachelor's degree,or higher,with an emphasis in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering 

Typical Knowledge,Skills and Abilities: Here are some of the knowledge,skills and abilities that are typically associated with the job,though not all-inclusive: * *

  • Knowledge of geotechnical design,including foundation design,retaining walls,slope stability,soil settlement (magnitude and time-rate),geoseismic design,and geohazard analysis/mitigation.

  • Working knowledge and/or the ability to become familiar with UDOT and AASHTO design and construction standards

  • Knowledge of geotechnical laboratory testing

  • Ability to use geotechnical design software

  • Experience with designing geotechnical instrumentation plans and interpretation

  • Ability to develop and conduct geotechnical investigations

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

Supplemental Information Here is some additional information of which you should be aware:

  • Working conditions and physical requirements are moderate:  This position will involve some field work and the ability to traverse uneven,steep,and rough terrain.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader
