Job Summary

UIT -University Support Services has an immediate opening for a Data Architect. This position supports the data architecture, data modeling, and creation and maintenance of ETL workflows within the University of Utah’s Data Management and Analytics group in UIT on Main campus.

The direct responsibilities for this position will be to support the Vice President for Research ( VPR ) data needs, research administration related data, and overall research data governance. This position will report to UIT but will have a strong line of communication and shared oversight with the Vice President for Research Office, and specifically the Research Data Analytics group in the Office of Research Information Systems ( ORIS ).

Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for development of data movement, maintenance of the metadata layer, and designing of ETL jobs and data models, as well as daily maintenance of technical and business requirements for the entire Data Management life cycle. This position will be dedicated to working with the VPR Office and in turn the ORIS Office.

This may include gathering requirements from their user community; the design, development/implementation, and maintenance of data models, creating ETL programs, semantic layers, reports and dashboards, metadata definition, and end user training. Translates business requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data models. Coordinates data integrity and migration activities to eliminate redundancy and to improve operating efficiency. Works with a team to design, build, and support a strategic data management and integration initiative to support university-wide data needs. Other duties as assigned.

  • Designs, build, and maintain relational and non-relational databases for data storage or processing

  • Develops strategies for data warehouse implementation, data acquisition, and archive recovery.

  • Evaluate new data sources for adherence to the organization’s quality standards and ease of integration.

  • Oversee and maintain all current VPR data needs in the university’s data warehouse.

  • Work with data stewards to ensure data integrity and overall compliance with university regulations

  • Troubleshoots data warehouse software. Identifies and works with appropriate staff to resolve technical issues.

  • Monitoring and recovery of ETL jobs, which may require working earlier in the AM.

  • Responsible for attending weekly coordination meeting to understand IT changes that could impact data flows.

  • Responsible for weekend work required to maintain our ETL flows during IT maintenance weekends which currently occurs around once every 2 months.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) in a related area and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Preferences

  • Highly proficient in SQL , preferably in an Oracle environment

  • Knowledgeable about data warehousing concepts

  • Experience with Informatica PowerCenter

  • Experience with cloud based ETL technologies (NiFi, Jitterbit)

  • Experience with metadata management tools

  • Experience with at least one programming language (Python, R, C/C++, Java, etc)

  • Knowledgeable about data governance best practices

  • Experience in research administration and/or higher education
