Job Summary

The Welm Lab at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute seeks a Data Wrangler to contribute to their translational breast cancer research. The successful candidate will be responsible ensuring genomics data, laboratory assay data, and de-identified clinical data is efficiently organized and prepared for statistical analyses. They will perform data quality assessments, systematically label data, harmonize and normalize data, and integrate diverse data to produce analysis-ready datasets. This will involve developing and maintaining custom data scripts, pipelines, databases, web applications and documentation. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, data analysis or a related field and a minimum of 4 years of experience in the field or related area (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience)

  • Experience with managing, manipulating, and analyzing large datasets

  • Proficiency in Unix, R, and Python

  • Ability to keep well-documented code while generating project deliverables on time

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Demonstrated success working in a team-oriented environment

  • This is a patient-sensitive position and the applicant must be willing to complete HIPAA training.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 6-8 years of related experience in the field or related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

Preferences

Preferences:

  • Working knowledge of data mining and statistical data analysis methods

  • Experience with developing, maintaining, and querying SQL databases

  • Ability to generate interactive visualizations using R-Shiny or similar frameworks

  • Experience using high performance compute clusters with attached local storage

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services Simple Storage Service ( AWS S3)

  • Experience with Cloud-based compute services such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)

  • Experience with Cloud-based bioinformatics platforms such as Seven Bridges/Velsera, DNA Nexus, Terra
