Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, responsible for planning, organizing, directing and/or controlling all aspects pertaining to laboratory functions, staffing and financial management operations pertaining to areas including (but not limited to) specimen maintenance, data collection, process management, standard operating procedure development and adherence, and outcomes monitoring. Acts as a catalyst fostering, supporting, and bridging collaborative efforts between physicians, physician-scientists, and basic/translational scientists. Participates in preparing budgets and setting research goals.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  1. Manages and advances Center objectives in relation to research and scientific functions, including (but not limited to) laboratory, research and development, operations research, statistical methods, technical reporting, and outcomes publishing.

  2. Collaborates, develops, and submits novel research grant applications, and participates as principal investigator or co-principal investigator.

  3. Proposes innovative correlative studies using biological specimens from ongoing clinical trials and clinical data for identification of novel predictive, prognostic, diagnostic, and/or therapeutic biomarkers.

  4. Identifies and implements creative solutions to overcome problems.

  5. Ensures competency of staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through ongoing staff performance evaluations. Oversees recruitment, training, orientation, and professional development of laboratory staff in support of accomplishing division goals and mission.

  6. Cooperates with internal and external investigators on multiple research projects aiding in scientific significance and feasibility.

  7. Researches and stays current with project related scientific literature and select novel biomarkers to be correlated with patient outcome.

  8. Correlate relevant clinical and laboratory data charts and enter them on registries or similar databases.

  9. Develops and maintains informational databases regarding laboratory data, patient data, and standard operating protocols (SOPs).

  10. Contributes to teaching activities by preparing and presenting educational materials.

  11. Attends national conferences and presents results of studies.

Problem Solving

The incumbent decides how to, best accomplish the daily requirements of the various research studies, determines workload, prioritizes, delegates and establishes systems needed to carry out the specific studies. The incumbent functions independently under minimal supervision, follows National Cancer Institute ( NCI ), IRB and other regulatory agency guidelines, seeking council from the Director as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

A Doctoral degree in a health science field or equivalent, and five years of direct clinical or scientific research in oncology and/or biomarker characterization required. Knowledge regarding National Institutes of Health ( NIH ) regulations, Institutional Review Board ( IRB ) requirements, as well as, effective communication skills required. Direct patient care experience not required.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
